There’s a Picasso in Poughkeepsie.story + photos by niki@hvny.info Actually, there are several Picasso’s on display in Poughkeepsie, at least publicly. There is also work by Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keeffe, the founders of The Hudson River School, and pieces dating back as early as 1375 BCE. These pieces are all part of Vassar College’s extensive collection – over 22,000 works, some on permanent display, others as part of special exhibits – and all are right here in the Queen City of the Hudson Valley.

Vassar was the first college in the country to include an art museum as part of its original plan in 1864. As time progresses, the elite institution has chronicled the cultural shifts of society as reflected through the artist’s lens. “The Arts, as we knew them, were transformed in March 2020 as theaters and concert halls across the globe began to shut their doors. Despite these intense and unrivaled challenges, resilient artists of all kinds found new ways to express themselves through their work. Art demands imagination. Radical imagination.” The arts of today will be explored during the 20th season of MODfest, running January 28 through February 7 at Vassar College. Programs traversing the 20th and 21st centuries will be held both in-person and online, due to the ongoing pandemic. All events are free and open to the public, with advance registration required for a few of the programs (see full event listings in the calendar). The only really good thing about this cold: Ice yachting!It was disappointing earlier this winter thinking it wasn’t going to get cold enough for the river to freeze. But luckily, I guess, it has been so cold these last couple of weeks that the Hudson River has frozen over, and is solid enough in some spots to allow space for one of the area’s favorite pastimes: ice yachting also known as ice boat racing or ice sailing. Dutch settlers used boats as a way to quickly transport items “in the form of sheep and people being transported on the Hudson River by ice boat from Athens to Albany in the early 1800s.” Recreational boating quickly followed “utilizing the traditional gaff-rigged sail pattern of Hudson River Valley sloops for propulsion, and cast iron ice skates (or runners) as media,” according to the National Park Service. “These became in fact the fastest vehicles on earth at the time, regularly beating the trains racing up and down the shores of the Hudson. Even in modest breeze, these boats could reach speeds of 75 miles per hour.” FDR became passionate about ice yachting as he grew up watching his uncle John compete in races on the Hudson River. John Roosevelt won the prestigious Ice Yacht Challenge Pennant of America and was a founding member of the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club, which is still in existence today. According to Hudson River Ice Yachting, the extended cold in 2022 has brought “good ice” in several locations in the Hudson Valley, including launches from Murderers Creek in Athens over the weekend. With this week’s temperatures still in the single digits, there’s a good chance we’ll see ice yachts upriver, perhaps chasing an Amtrak up the Hudson.
