Glenham and Groveville Textile Mills in the 19th Century
Tuesday, November 23, 2021 • 7pm • Free • Virtual event hosted by the Beacon Historical Society • This illustrated talk will focus on the Glenham and Groveville textile mills on the banks of Fishkill Creek, in the period when they were owned and operated by NYC dry goods scion, Alexander T. Stewart from ca. 1860s to the late 19th century. Artifacts and images from the Beacon Historical Society’s collection, combined with other historical resources will document Stewart’s role in manufacturing wool and carpets in these local facilities. Unexpected History: FDR's Gatehouse and Stories from the Library Grounds

Main House at Olana Reopens
November 26-27, 2021 • 11am - 3pm • Olana State Historic Site, Hudson • "Explore at Your Own Pace" tours will be offered on November 26 and November 27 from 11 AM to 3PM. Guided house tours will resume December 3 and will run Friday - Sunday from 11am to 3pm. Olana's 250-acres will continue to be open and free every day from 8am - sunset. Sinterklaas Crowns & Branches Workshops

George Spencer - “Cleaning Out the Attic”
On view through November 29, 2021 • Free • Window On Hudson, Hudson • Come celebrate George Spencer and his ambitious exhibition, “Cleaning out the Attic” on Saturday, November 13th, from 6-8pm. Spencer reached deep into his archives and came out with a multitude of paintings which he reworked into a series of totems and wall hangings. The work fills the storefront windows and spills into the gallery space, covering the walls, floor and ceiling in a chaotic cacophony of bright colors and abstract forms.   “Cleaning out the Attic” gave Spencer the opportunity to create bold, new work and at the same time offer retrospection on his years of painting and sculpting. By cutting his canvases into pieces and then collaging the fragments onto cardboard tubes, sheets of lumber, or rolls of tar paper Spencer is mirroring what he sees as the recent dismantling and decay of society. • http://www.windowonhudson.org.

“WinterOver?”
On view through Spring 2022 • Time & Space, Ltd. 434 Columbia Street, Hudson • Featuring the sculpture of Pamela Blum, Jeremy K. Bullis, Nurya Chana, Dan Devine, Mimi Graminski, Chiarra Hughes-Mba, Linda Mussmann, Gelah Penn, and Katharine Umsted. George Spencer, the curator of “WinterOver?”, asked the artists to produce outdoor sculptures that will deteriorate over time. With the pieces standing in the yard of TSL for 6 months they will be exposed to nature’s extreme elements. Heat, wind, rain, snow, insects, mold, and mushrooms will cause the work to bend, crack, warp, fade and dissolve. Spencer uses this deterioration as a metaphor for the destructive changes (like the attempt to overturn the 2020 election, the countless unnecessary deaths resulting from the incompetent response to COVID-19, the attack on the Capitol, and so much more) occurring in the world around us. In the early Spring of 2022 the artists will be asked to revisit their work and assess the damage done during the Winter months. Is their sculpture still standing; do only fragments remain; it is disfigured but still recognizable? (Much like the questions Spencer asks about our Country.) What then is the individual artist’s response to these changes? Do they rebuild; build something new; make repairs; or leave things as they are? Morton/Rhinecliff Holiday Weekend: Rhinecliff Light Up Night
Saturday, December 11, 2021 • 5pm •  Saturday evening we will shine some literal and figurative light on the hamlet! We ask everyone to pick up luminaria kits at the library and then line the streets with candles. That evening we can enjoy the sights by walking and visiting with neighbors while enjoying a complimentary hot beverage from the Epicurean. You can also stop and have your picture taken in front of the Rhinebeck Grange wreath. Perhaps some neighbors will have heat lamps out, perhaps there will be fire pits, perhaps music on porches. We know that there will be lots of conviviality! Luminaria kits will be available at Morton for curbside pick up beginning Wednesday, December 1. Each kit will contain 10 candles, bags, and sand and we are asking for a donation of $20 per kit. FW Murnau’s The Last Laugh
Sunday, January 9, 2022 • 2pm • $6 • The Rosendale Theatre, 408 Main Street • Murnau’s silent film The Last Laugh tells the tragic story of a self-confident hotel doorman, brilliantly portrayed by Emil Jannings, who is demoted to lavatory attendant because he is considered 'too old'. Janning’s entire identity is based on his position and especially on his uniform, which symbolizes power and respectability to his lower-middle-class community of family and friends. Proud of his position, responsibilities and uniform, and shocked by his demotion, humiliated, the old man struggles to carry on with his life.
