Events for February 25 - March 3, 2019

▲ What critters are in your backyard?
I've always been curious about the animals in our backyard. As a kid, one of the first pictures I took with the camera my dad gave me was of deer in our backyard. In the mornings, I'd watch the birds at the feeder from our sliding glass door with our black lab Shadow loyally by my side, and we'd tiptoe around Fred, a bat that took up residence in the eave of our roof every summer. A few years ago, I bought a trail camera. Yes, the video feed is full of deer aplenty, squirrels bouncing around "secretly" burying their stash of hickory nuts, and birds scratching the ground for worms and seed, especially during the in-between seasons. But sometimes, the camera captures some unique moments and visitors through our backyard – coyotes, skunks, a deer standing on two legs to snack on a tree, a raccoon eating chips in the rain, and my favorite so far: a bobcat tenderly using the winter tracks left behind by another animal to disguise their own prints

Check the HVNY website and Youtube channel for our trail cam videos, and test your knowledge during Bill Robinson’s Wild Animal Show at the Red Hook Community Center on Wednesday (free, with tickets required, listing below) or during a Winter Wildlife Hike on Saturday, March 2 from noon to 1:30pm at the Mud Creek Environmental Learning Center, 1024 Route 66 in Ghent.
