Marist alumna takes love of mascot to new heights
Heidi Richards, a 2008 graduate of Marist College took her love for the college’s Red Fox mascot to new heights— literally – by “dreaming up a unique, eco-friendly treehouse shaped like a fox’s head,” according to her alma mater. The space is now available to rent among the picturesque landscape of Pownal, Maine.
"The first response to people's reactions that comes to my mind is 'I promise I'm not obsessed,' but I feel like that's a hard argument to make now," said Richards, who is now a social worker living in Maine. "Being a three-season athlete at Marist had a great influence on my attachment to our mascot. I would not be into foxes if I wasn't a Marist Red Fox."
Richard’s plan for a fox-inspired home was sparked by a pair of large windows on Craigslist that she said looked like the ears of a fox. The house, called The Copper Fox, is powered by solar panels and insulated by help wool, and was constructed with approximately 85-percent of wood sourced from trees within a 30-mile radius.
"Now that I'm not a student-athlete at Marist, the fox is still with me always," Heidi said. "I loved my time at Marist, and it has guided and shaped me as a person in more ways than one."
