Community to Honor Forgotten WWI Veteran in Ulster County Memorial Service

Thursday, November 7, 2024 at 11am
Location: Ulster County Veterans Cemetery, Plains Road, New Paltz, NY
The community is invited to join a ceremony at the Ulster County Veterans Cemetery to honor World War I veteran John Lodge Stoneman. A final resting place will be provided for Stoneman, who served his country over a century ago and whose remains went unclaimed for decades before being brought to Wiltwyck Cemetery in Kingston, NY.

John Lodge Stoneman was born in Detroit in 1895 and served in the U.S. Army from 1917 to 1919. Despite his honorable service, his cremated remains were left unclaimed until Wiltwyck Cemetery Superintendent Matt Sirni accepted them in 2023. Since then, Wiltwyck volunteers have worked tirelessly, with the support of Congressman Pat Ryan’s office and the Ulster County Veterans Services Agency, to retrieve his Certificate of Military Service and secure him a proper burial.

The service will include a procession led by the Patriot Guard, with an escort from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Department. Thanks to the Veterans Services Agency and Wiltwyck Cemetery’s dedicated volunteers, Stoneman’s life and service will be remembered with respect and dignity. For more information, please contact Wiltwyck Cemetery and Crematory at (845) 331-0199 or email pr@wiltwyckcemetery.org

“The Accidental Hero"
Sunday, November 10, 2024 at 3pm
The Stissing Center for Arts & Culture, Pine Plains
"The Accidental Hero" is a one-man, multi-media show about Lieutenant Colonel Matt Konop, an American officer in World War II who miraculously liberates the Czech villages of his grandparents. It's a remarkable true story written and performed by his grandson, Patrick Dewane. Patrick's grandfather never spoke about his service in the war, but when he died, his basement yielded a treasure trove of typewritten accounts, photos, and rare film footage. Patrick plays a dozen different roles as he powerfully recounts his grandfather's journey from Omaha Beach to the Battle of the Bulge and the end of the war. Click here to purchase tickets (free for veterans).
