"Never before has our work as farmers and stewards been so important. Take care of your farm’s most important asset: you. Wash your hands more frequently and make sure you are getting adequate sleep. We need our strength these days."

That's the message from the Cornell Cooperative Extension to help guide our local farmers, their farms and our neighbors through this COVID-19 pandemic.

Not only do our area farmers have to deal with the personal hardships we're collectively facing, but farms have to take into consideration issues that will impact not only their livelihood but also the greater community that depends on their food: What if our farmers get sick? Who will take over the farm if the farmer needs to be quarantined for two weeks? How can they safely deliver farm-fresh food to their community?

While we may need to stick six-feet-apart for a bit longer, the cooperative says, "now is the time to strengthen the fabric of our own communities by increasing our social connections. Pick up the phone and call them. It is that simple."
