Orange County Health Commissioner advises flu, COVID vaccinations for upcoming season

"Every fall we see flu and COVID cases climb as people spend more time indoors and gather for the holidays," said Orange County Health Commissioner Dr. Cortland Lohff. "Getting vaccinated now gives your body time to build protection before activity peaks. It's quick and it's safe to get both shots at the same visit, and it's one of the best things you can do to protect yourself and your family."

The commissioner added that everyone 6 months and older should get an annual flu vaccine. COVID vaccination is recommended for most children, adults, and especially important for people at higher risk, including those who are pregnant or immunocompromised.

New this season, an mRNA flu vaccine is available for adults 50 and older; residents should talk with their healthcare provider whether it is right for them. Older adults, pregnant people and families with infants should also ask their providers about RSV protection.

Flu season typically runs from October through May and peaks between December and February. To find vaccines nearby, visit vaccinefinder.org.
