People are tired of the sun setting before they even leave work and studies show that a later sunset could lead to a reduction in energy consumption, crime, and vehicle and pedestrian fatalities.

On January 8, 2020, New York State Senator James Skoufis (Senate District 39: Orange, Rockland, Ulster counties) introduced a bill to make daylight savings time permanent across New York and transition to Atlantic Standard Time. The move would set the time an hour later than the current time, leading to later sunsets in winter.

"Switching in and out of Daylight Saving Time is an antiquated back-and-forth that's rooted in World War I history and is nothing short of annoying,” Skoufis said in a statement.

The bill includes provisions that need the support of similar laws to follow suit in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut since commuters will be traveling to and from New York State. The bill will only go into effect if the other states pass similar measures to change to Atlantic Standard Time.
