Tolls on Hudson River crossings to increase May 1

Another reason to stay close to home: Tolls go up May 1

The New York State Bridge Authority (NYSBA) will raise the price of tolls throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley starting this Friday, May 1.

State senator Sue Serino (R- Hyde Park) is trying to get the NYSBA to delay the increase, saying: “The only people who are regularly utilizing the bridges right now are essential workers. These are the very people who are on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis, and they should not have to bear the burden of increased costs associated with traveling to and from the jobs we rely on them for. The Bridge Authority has done a great job keeping costs down and staving off toll increases for nearly a decade. Pausing this increase for the time being is one way we can continue to honor those who are doing their part during this time to keep our community safe and healthy.”

But according to the NYSBA, “in order to properly maintain its bridges in a safe and cost-effective manner, the NYSBA must raise tolls at its five Hudson River crossings for the first time since 2012.” And so as of May 1, rates will rise over the course of four years, increasing annually for passenger cars by 10-cents for EZ Pass holders and 25-cents for those paying cash.

Bridges impacted by the plan include the Newburgh-Beacon, Bear Mountain, Kingston-Rhinecliff, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Mid-Hudson and the Rip Van Winkle.
