State mask requirement in schools to be lifted
Effective Wednesday, March 2, 2022 • The New York State mask requirement in schools will be lifted. "We're at our lowest point in pediatric cases since July of 2021, and that was before the school year started,” Gov. Hochul said on Sunday. “So this has been our trend over the school year. So as you can all see, looking at the data and the evidence that we follow, that we are in a much, much better place."

“So why are we waiting till March 2nd? This came out at the end of the day, Friday, we took the entire weekend to work with our Department of Health and our team here at the Chamber, as well as reaching out to the teachers, the PTAs, talking to school superintendents, and even our Commissioner of Education, Betty Rosa, who's been embedded in this issue with us and what an amazing partner she has been. So, we wanted to make sure that we had the advice and the wisdom of all these different groups that are really directly affected by this decision and in touch with them for a number of days. They let us know that yes, students are coming back but a lot of families are still on vacation until later tonight. A lot of people who work in the school system are not back. So they wanted a little bit of time to assess guidance that we are working on, it will be out very shortly, again, in consultation with these school leaders, this is how we do it here in the State of New York.” • https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-announces-plan-end-state-mask-requirement-schools-starting-march-2

“WinterOver?”
On view through Spring 2022 • Time & Space, Ltd. 434 Columbia Street, Hudson • Featuring the sculpture of Pamela Blum, Jeremy K. Bullis, Nurya Chana, Dan Devine, Mimi Graminski, Chiarra Hughes-Mba, Linda Mussmann, Gelah Penn, and Katharine Umsted. George Spencer, the curator of “WinterOver?”, asked the artists to produce outdoor sculptures that will deteriorate over time. With the pieces standing in the yard of TSL for 6 months they will be exposed to nature’s extreme elements. Heat, wind, rain, snow, insects, mold, and mushrooms will cause the work to bend, crack, warp, fade and dissolve. Spencer uses this deterioration as a metaphor for the destructive changes (like the attempt to overturn the 2020 election, the countless unnecessary deaths resulting from the incompetent response to COVID-19, the attack on the Capitol, and so much more) occurring in the world around us. In the early Spring of 2022 the artists will be asked to revisit their work and assess the damage done during the Winter months. Is their sculpture still standing; do only fragments remain; it is disfigured but still recognizable? (Much like the questions Spencer asks about our Country.) What then is the individual artist’s response to these changes? Do they rebuild; build something new; make repairs; or leave things as they are? (These are the questions we must constantly ask ourselves about life.) • http://timeandspace.org/

“Catskill’s China Painter”: The Botanical Art of Emily Cole and the Politics of Women’s Work within American Painting Traditions
Tuesday, March 15, 2022 • 6pm • Zoom • Join Amanda Malmstrom, Associate Curator at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site, for this presentation exploring the life, work, and legacy of Emily Cole (1843-1913), a lifelong artist of botanicals and painted porcelain. Emily chose as her subject plants and their flowers, close-up and in isolation, celebrating the Catskill landscape through methods differing from that of Hudson River School painters like her father Thomas Cole, who depicted the sweeping, picturesque, and sublime vistas of landscapes. Emily Cole created an extensive oeuvre of works which she sold and exhibited in the Hudson Valley and New York City, where she also served as a charter member of the New York Society of Ceramic Arts in 1892. Through her presentation, Malmstrom will explore Emily Cole’s relationship with her family and lifelong home in Catskill, NY, and well as with the Church family residing across the river in Hudson, NY. Recent discoveries show that Frederic Church served as a mentor to Emily Cole while she was at art school, and Church’s daughter Isabel or “Downie” confided in Emily Cole as close friends and fellow botanical artists. Emily Cole’s life, art, and personal and professional circles provides a lens not only into American flower painting in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, but a way to examine the social and political implications of women’s work during this period and as presented at historic sites and museums today. • LINK

Author Talk: Sarah K. Hermans, The 1903 Jackson Corners Signature Quilt
Wednesday March 16, 2022 • 7pm • Free • Virtual event hosted by Historic Red Hook • Sarah K. Hermans grew up in Millerton, NY, and has resided in Poughkeepsie and Pine Plains. Sarah spent a decade researching the quilt, the 260 names of local people from Milan, Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Pine Plains, Livingston, Clermont, and Ancram embroidered on it, and the world of Northern Dutchess and Southern Columbia Counties in 1903 when the “simple” life was coming to an end. • Register at www.historicredhook.org/register

Wendy is a former horticulturist at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Dutchess County where she worked with Master Gardener volunteers in the horticulture lab. She also attended the gardening program at the Cary Institute in Millbrook and is the Director of the Livingston Free Library. • Join the event, here.
