Bald Eagle Viewing at Boscobel

“WinterOver?”
On view through Spring 2022 • Time & Space, Ltd. 434 Columbia Street, Hudson • Featuring the sculpture of Pamela Blum, Jeremy K. Bullis, Nurya Chana, Dan Devine, Mimi Graminski, Chiarra Hughes-Mba, Linda Mussmann, Gelah Penn, and Katharine Umsted. George Spencer, the curator of “WinterOver?”, asked the artists to produce outdoor sculptures that will deteriorate over time. With the pieces standing in the yard of TSL for 6 months they will be exposed to nature’s extreme elements. Heat, wind, rain, snow, insects, mold, and mushrooms will cause the work to bend, crack, warp, fade and dissolve. Spencer uses this deterioration as a metaphor for the destructive changes (like the attempt to overturn the 2020 election, the countless unnecessary deaths resulting from the incompetent response to COVID-19, the attack on the Capitol, and so much more) occurring in the world around us. In the early Spring of 2022 the artists will be asked to revisit their work and assess the damage done during the Winter months. Is their sculpture still standing; do only fragments remain; it is disfigured but still recognizable? (Much like the questions Spencer asks about our Country.) What then is the individual artist’s response to these changes? Do they rebuild; build something new; make repairs; or leave things as they are? (These are the questions we must constantly ask ourselves about life.) • http://timeandspace.org/

Author Talk: Andrea C. Mosterman, Spaces of Enslavement: A History of Slavery and Resistance in Dutch New York
Thursday, February 17, 2022 • 7PM • Free • Virtual hosted by Historic Red Hook event via Zoom •  Andrea Mosterman is associate professor in Atlantic History and Joseph Tregle Professor in Early American History at the University of New Orleans. In her work, she explores the multi-faceted dimensions of slavery, slave trade, and cross-cultural contact in the Dutch Atlantic and Early America with special emphasis on Early New York. She has published her work in the Journal of African History and Early American Studies, and she curated the digital exhibit "Slavery in New Netherland" for the New Netherland Institute. Her book Spaces of Enslavement: A History of Slavery and Resistance in Dutch New York (Cornell University Press, 2021) won the 2020 Hendricks Award for best book-length manuscript relating to New Netherland and the Dutch colonial experience. This talk is presented in collaboration with the Dutchess County Department of History and Cornell Press. How the Esopus Munsee People Got Through Winter Before Electricity: Part II

Evan will focus on the winter life ways of the Esopus Munsee, the Algonquian-speaking people who have long inhabited the Esopus river valley. Wurtemburg: The History of a Palatine Hamlet in Rhinebeck
Friday, February 25, 2022 • 7pm • Virtual event hosted by the Rhinebeck Historical Society • Among the collections of the Rhinebeck Historical Society is a beautifully executed property plat map from 1802. Entitled "A Map of Wittenburg Tract Situate in the Town of Rhinebeck Part of the Estate of the Honorable Chief Justice Morgan Lewis," this document provides the Rosetta stone for understanding the settlement and development of the modern hamlet of Wurtemburg. In this presentation, Will Tatum will provide a brief background of the Palatine immigrants who established the hamlet, decode the 1802 map, and offer an outline of Wurtemburg's subsequent development. As one of the Town of Rhinebeck's key cultural resources, everyone should be familiar with this historical treasure that runs parallel to Route 9G in the southeastern part of the town. • Host Will Tatum received his Ph.D. in History from Brown University in 2016 and has served as the Dutchess County Historian since 2012. Author Talk: Sarah K. Hermans, The 1903 Jackson Corners Signature Quilt
Wednesday March 16, 2022 • 7PM • Free • Virtual event hosted by Historic Red Hook • Sarah K. Hermans grew up in Millerton, NY, and has resided in Poughkeepsie and Pine Plains. Her grandmother, Clara Weller Losee, was a dedicated local and family historian for the towns of Red Hook, Milan, and Northeast. In 2010 an old, stained muslin sheet made of 42 blocks sewn together, many covered in embroidered names, was passed down through five generations of the Hermans family (originally from Academy Hill Road in the hamlet of Jackson Corners). Sarah spent a decade researching the quilt, the 260 names of local people from Milan, Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Pine Plains, Livingston, Clermont, and Ancram embroidered on it, and the world of Northern Dutchess and Southern Columbia Counties in 1903 when the “simple” life was coming to an end. • Register at www.historicredhook.org/register
