Meet the Maker:

Name: Michelle Moore

What county do you live in?: Ulster

Tell us about yourself: I am a Hudson Valley-based natural dye artist and surface designer inspired by the beauty, colors, and perfect imperfections of nature. Growing up in the Catskill Mountains instilled in me a deep appreciation for the outdoors and the changing seasons, which continue to influence my work.

Working with flowers from my garden and other natural materials, I explore the possibilities of natural dyes and eco-printing, to create colorful, whimsical, one-of-a-kind art and textiles. My work is driven by curiosity, experimentation, and a love of transforming unexpected materials into something new.

I am passionate about inspiring a more thoughtful and creative future for the textile industry through slower, nature-inspired processes. I am a graduate of the Textile + Surface Design program at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Fine Art program at SUNY Ulster, where I currently teach in the Fine Art Department.

What year did you start living/working in the Hudson Valley?: I was born and raised in Kingston.

What are some of your favorite things to do in the region?: Easy – I love to go on hikes to look for mushrooms, flowers, unique natural occurrences, waterfalls, and simply be outside in this beautiful environment. I also love to check out my favorite thrift shops for unique finds, and have drinks and snacks at the many incredible restaurants and bakeries! I also am obsessed with the local farm stands for fresh produce all season long. I love to pick all of the seasonal offerings from early season strawberries to pumpkins.
