Virtual Public Statement Hearings Set Regarding New 845 Area Code
Wednesday, March 23, 2022 • The New York State Public Service Commission (Commission) will hold virtual public statement hearings on to receive public comment regarding a petition filed by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) on November 30, 2021, which requests approval to overlay a new area code within the southeastern portion of New York State currently covered by the 845-area code. The 845-area code serves all or parts of Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, and Ulster counties. More info: Link

Donation Drive for Ukraine with Ukrainian American Youth Association of the Hudson Valley
March 23-31, 2022 • 9:00 am - 5:00 pm • Senator Hinchey's Kingston Office, 721 Broadway, Suite 150, Kingston • Senator Hinchey’s office is partnering with the Ukrainian American Youth Association of the Hudson Valley (UAYA) to host a drive in order to collect critical medical supplies desperately needed by those on the frontlines. In this time of crisis, it’s incumbent upon us to do everything we can to support Ukrainians as they fight for their freedom and for their democracy and these supplies have been directly requested as emergency needs. Those interested in donating are asked to prioritize the following items, which will be accepted at our Kingston Office (721 Broadway, Suite 150, Kingston) from Thursday, March 17, until Thursday, March 31, at 5:00 PM. The donations will then be distributed to UAYA to be sent to Ukraine.

“WinterOver?”
On view through Spring 2022 • Time & Space, Ltd. 434 Columbia Street, Hudson • Featuring the sculpture of Pamela Blum, Jeremy K. Bullis, Nurya Chana, Dan Devine, Mimi Graminski, Chiarra Hughes-Mba, Linda Mussmann, Gelah Penn, and Katharine Umsted. George Spencer, the curator of “WinterOver?”, asked the artists to produce outdoor sculptures that will deteriorate over time. With the pieces standing in the yard of TSL for 6 months they will be exposed to nature’s extreme elements. Heat, wind, rain, snow, insects, mold, and mushrooms will cause the work to bend, crack, warp, fade and dissolve. Spencer uses this deterioration as a metaphor for the destructive changes (like the attempt to overturn the 2020 election, the countless unnecessary deaths resulting from the incompetent response to COVID-19, the attack on the Capitol, and so much more) occurring in the world around us. In the early Spring of 2022 the artists will be asked to revisit their work and assess the damage done during the Winter months. Is their sculpture still standing; do only fragments remain; it is disfigured but still recognizable? (Much like the questions Spencer asks about our Country.) What then is the individual artist’s response to these changes? Do they rebuild; build something new; make repairs; or leave things as they are? Annual Burn Ban
Through May 14 • New York State’s springtime ban on open burning. Open burning is prohibited in NYS, with several exceptions:
Camp fires or any other outdoor fires less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width or diameter are allowed.
Small cooking fires are allowed.
Ceremonial or celebratory bonfires are allowed. Disposal of flags or religious items in a small-sized fire is allowed, if it is not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.
Only charcoal or dry, clean, untreated or unpainted wood can be burned.
Fires cannot be left unattended and must be fully extinguished.
In towns with a total population less than 20,000, you may burn tree limbs with attached leaves. The limbs must be less than 6 inches in diameter and 8 feet in length (also referred to as brush). However, this is not allowed from March 16 through May 14 due to the increased risk of wildfires. Burning loose leaves or leaf piles is illegal. • More info: LINK

How to Have a Successful Garden in White Deer Country
Tuesday, March 29, 2022 • 6:30pm • Virtual event hosted by the Phoenicia Library • After a long winter, gardeners look forward to the growing season for fresh vegetables and flowers from their gardens. Part of making it a rewarding experience is knowing how to deal with insects, diseases, rabbits, woodchucks and deer. The deer population has exploded, making them a primary garden pest. But deer don’t have to win the battle, according to Wendy Tremper Wollerton, a seasoned gardener, who spent more than 25 years living on a property heavily trafficked by deer. Wendy is a former horticulturist at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Dutchess County where she worked with Master Gardener volunteers in the horticulture lab. She also attended the gardening program at the Cary Institute in Millbrook and is the Director of the Livingston Free Library. • Join the event, here.
