Local Author Showcase: Alvin Eng & Mark Morgenstern
Monday, November 14, 2022 • 5 to 7pm • Rough Draft Bar and Books, Kingston • Each author will have a table for meet-and-greets, book signings, and conversation with friends, family, fans, and potential new readers. This month’s featured authors are: Alvin Eng is author of the memoir Our Laundry, Our Town: My Chinese American Life from Flushing to the Downtown Stage and Beyond. From behind the counter of his parents' laundry on Union Street and a household rooted in a different century and culture to the turbulent, exciting streets of 1970s New York City, playwright Alvin Eng shares his riveting, tender story of finding voice, identity and community through the transformative power of Asian American arts, activism, punk rock, and theater. Mark Morgenstern left a budding music career behind when he realized he didn’t want to wind up in a mid-level boogie band somewhere in the hinterlands of America. Regular Firearms Season for Deer and Bear Hunting
Saturday, November 19, 2022 • Deer and bear hunting seasons in New York's Southern Zone begins Saturday, Nov. 19 and runs through Sunday, December 11, 2022. Hunters are reminded that the daily hunting hours for deer and bear now include the full daylight period, beginning 30 minutes before sunrise and continuing until 30 minutes after sunset. Hunters should check the sunrise and sunset times before hunting each day. Hunters should also remember that anytime they are pursuing deer or bear with a firearm, they must now wear fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink clothing-either a hat, vest, or jacket visible in all directions. Chasing Icebergs: Art and a Disappearing Landscape
Opens on November 20, 2022 and will be on view through March 26, 2023 • Olana State Historic Site, Hudson • The first winter exhibition at Olana State Historic Site will be shown primarily in the Sharp Family Gallery at Olana, and highlights Frederic Church’s iceberg sketches from his 1859 intrepid voyage to the Arctic. Risking his life, Church chartered a ship to the treacherous waters surrounding Newfoundland and Labrador — an area known as Iceberg Alley — on a mission that made him the first American artist to explore the region for the purpose of painting icebergs, a landmark event in the history of art. The exhibit includes photographs and historic texts which Church collected about icebergs and Arctic exploration, as well as the work of four contemporary artists who contemplate the wonder and fragility of Earth’s polar environments.For tickets and additional information, visit OLANA.org/icebergs.

Dam Removal Case Studies

Dam removal is a river restoration strategy that can reconnect stream habitat, improve water quality, and reduce flooding hazards. This can be an expensive and complex process that involves close collaboration with NYS DEC regulatory staff. Michael Fraatz, Biologist from NYS DEC Bureau of Ecosystem Health, will discuss the 2021 removal of a historic dam within the Moodna Creek in the Village of Washingtonville, NY. He will review the work plan between the applicant and agency staff, compliance monitoring during removal, and restoration of impacted areas post-construction. Suzette Lopane, Landscape Architect from Westchester County, will share information on their work removing barriers on the Furnace Brook in Westchester County. The Maiden Lane Dam is no longer compliant with the latest standards for dam safety.
