Segregation & Staatsburgh: From Black Service to White Servants
Monday, October 10, 2022 • 1pm • Cost: Free • 75 Mills Mansion Drive, Staatsburg • Staatsburgh’s founder, Governor Morgan Lewis, enslaved people of African descent at Staatsburgh. Yet, when his great-granddaughter, Ruth Livingston Mills, lived at Staatsburgh at the turn of the 20th Century, the staff was exclusively White and of European descent. At the same time, a free Black community was able to grow and thrive in the surrounding hamlet. • Join site staff for a conversation exploring the transition from a Black presence at Staatsburgh during the early 19th Century to the apparent absence of Black people at the estate during the Gilded Age. This one-hour program will include historic photographs and documents related to this history, notably a letter from Staatsburgh’s archives detailing the sale by Morgan Lewis, of Peter Williams into slavery, to fellow “Founding Father,” John Jay. The presentation will focus on recent research into the Black people living and working in both the Staatsburgh estate and in the hamlet of Staatsburg, bringing in the larger context of racial oppression and Jim Crow, to present audiences with a new perspective on Staatsburgh. • The program is free, but reservations are required at www.Bookeo.com/StaatsburghSHS.

NYS DEC Climate Smart Communities Grants & Cayuga Creek Floodplain Restoration (Webinar)
Thursday, October 13, 2022 • 8:30-9:30am • Cost: Free • Virtual • Myra Fedyniak from NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s Office of Climate Change will present on Climate Smart Communities Grants. The Climate Smart Communities Grant Program is a competitive 50/50 matching grant program for municipalities to implement projects focused on climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas mitigation. Project types also include certain planning and assessment projects that are part of a strategy to achieve Climate Smart Communities Certification. Emily Root from Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper will share their work with the Town of Niagara to restore and reconnect the floodplain of the Cayuga Creek, with funding in part from the Climate Smart Communities Grant program. This project restores habitat, mitigates downstream flooding, and improves community access. This program is supported by funding from the Hudson River Estuary Program, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, with support from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund, in cooperation with NEIWPCC. • Link

14th Annual International Hannah Arendt Center Conference: “Rage and Reason: Democracy Under the Tyranny of Social Media”
October 13-14, 2022 • Olin Hall, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson • Presented by OSUN, Hannah Arendt Center, and Center for Civic Engagement, the conference responds to the undeniable fact that rage and emotions are increasingly a force in our political and cultural lives. Participants include Author Pankaj Mishra, Political and Sociological Theorist William Davies, CEO at PEN America Suzanne Nossel, Political Scientist Uday Mehta, Facebook Whistleblower Frances Haugen, and Afghan Writer Jamil Jan Kochai. The conference asks: How can democratic rage be harnessed in social and political movements? Is rage essential to call out systemic and ingrained injustice? How can a politics of rage acknowledge rational and expert authority? If humans are tribal beings, how can they live in multicultural liberal societies? Are experts and elites themselves simply one tribe defending their self-interests? Must social media contribute to the fracturing of society into raging tribes? Is there a common interest in society knowable through reason? Common Ground
October 13-16, 2022 • Fisher Center, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson • This fall marks the return of the Fisher Center LAB Biennial, a thematic festival that invites and commissions artists to create new works that grapple with some of the most pressing questions of our time.  The 2022–23 edition, Common Ground, is a year-long international program focusing on the politics of land and food and taking place on four continents. Hulda: The Other Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Saturday, October 15, 2022 - Sunday, October 30, 2022 • 1pm and 3:15pm • Cost: $25 • The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, 430 Broadway, Sleepy Hollow • Each fall, thousands of people from around the world flock to Sleepy Hollow to visit the burial ground made famous in Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” The famous graveyard was also known for another resident, Hulda of Bohemia, the “High German witch doctor” who, according to Irving, is said to have bewitched Sleepy Hollow so that a “drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land.” Edgar Mayhew Bacon’s 1897 book Chronicles of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow mentions Hulda as the woman whose basket weaving and healing abilities led to her being shunned as witch, while her skills as a sharpshooter made her a Revolutionary War hero. The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow has honored Hulda with a gravestone, as well as a live presentation of Hulda: The Other Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which opens October 15th. Theatre on the Road and the Old Dutch Church in Kingston present a new living history tour, THE CITY AWAKENS
Saturdays in October • 7pm • The Old Dutch Church Cemetery, 272 Wall Street, Kingston • During the one-hour tour guests will meet George Clinton, a Revolutionary War hero who became the first Governor of New York. Visitors will also meet American abolitionist and women’s rights activist Sojourner Truth. John Jay the first Supreme Court Justice will make an appearance, along with James Lindsley, the first mayor of Kingston. The 13th Season of ‘Bridge Music’

Cary Science Conversation: Big Trees, Lightning, and the Future of Tropical Forests
Thursday, October 20, 2022 • 7pm • Virtual, via Zoom • Free • A virtual science talk featuring Cary Institute research fellow Dr. Evan Gora in conversation with Cary president Dr. Joshua Ginsberg. Trees are allies in the fight against climate change. As they grow, they capture carbon from the atmosphere and store it in their trunks, branches, and roots. Big trees play an outsized role in shaping our planet’s climate. Globally, the largest 1% of trees store more than ½ of the carbon sequestered by forests. These long-lived giants also shape the environment around them. Why do large trees die? And how does their loss impact carbon dynamics, biodiversity, and the composition of forests? These are among the questions that forest ecologist Dr. Evan Gora will discuss. His research combines fieldwork, modeling, big data, and emerging technology to understand and forecast threats to big trees, with a focus on lightning in the tropics. We know from satellites that the tropics receive 100 million lightning strikes annually. Yet lightning has been understudied. Gora will share new insights on lightning’s impact on big trees and their neighbors, including the anatomy of a strike, the role of lightning in carbon cycling, and why some tree species are killed by strikes while others actually benefit. • This event is free and open to all and will include time for audience Q&A. Virtual Lecture: The Hudson Valley in the Ice Age
Thursday, October 20, 2022 • 7pm • Virtual • Starting about 25,000 years ago, an immense sheet of ice advanced out of Labrador and swept southward across much of North America. A good deal of that ice entered the Hudson Valley and continued all the way to today’s Long Island. During this advance, the ice scoured all of our Hudson Valley and created much of its landscape, especially the Wall of Manitou – the Catskill Front. Later the climate warmed and the ice melted back to the north. Vast quantities of meltwater poured out of the retreating ice and sculpted by erosion a great deal more of our valley’s landscape. Several cycles of glacial advance and retreat occurred, and their combined erosive processes shaped our picturesque scenery. • Register: here.

Hudson River Watershed Alliance Annual Conference
October 24 - 26, 2022 • Across the watershed, communities are experiencing climate hazards including localized flooding, intense drought, Harmful Algal Blooms, beach closures, wildfires, and other impacts on water resources. To further community understanding of climate change, its impacts, and how we can prepare for it, the Annual Watershed Conference theme is Climate Change Impacts on Water in the Hudson Valley. This year, Hudson River Watershed Alliance is using a hybrid model for the conference, taking advantage of the respective strengths of both virtual and in-person programs. The first day’s webinar will share key context on climate projections and risks, providing a foundation for the conversations on adaptation strategies at the in-person sessions. The virtual session brings together scientists and experts that otherwise would have had to travel, using a format that is easy to record and reference in the future. Both in-person sessions feature local case studies and strategies from the Hudson River watershed, and will prioritize networking and conversation.

  • Monday, October 24, 2022 • 1-3:30pm • Virtual session to share climate change projections and other context-setting information.

  • Tuesday, October 25, 2022 • 9am – 12:30pm • An in-person session at the Henry A. Wallace Center, FDR Presidential Library & Museum in Hyde Park, to discuss climate change adaptation strategies and share case studies.

  • Wednesday, October 26, 2022 • 1-4pm • An in-person session at the Hudson River Maritime Museum Barn in Kingston, focused on flooding issues faced by municipalities along the Hudson River. This session will be facilitated by River Network, and will inform the Hudson River Flood Resilience Network’s strategic roadmap.

Kingston Street Sweep
Monday, October 24, 2022 • 10am - 2pm. (Rain date: October 31) • 177 Broadway, Kingston, at the corner of Broadway and McEntee • Riverkeeper is partnering with the NY-NJ Harbor & Estuary Program (HEP) to conduct fall "street sweeps" in both Kingston, NY and Hoboken, NJ. We will be using a comprehensive data collection protocol developed by HEP to focus on litter generation and dispersal methods along the right-of-ways, including sidewalks, to create linkages to the issue of floatable material or marine debris in the Estuary. • Volunteers are strongly advised to wear long pants and sturdy closed-toed shoes or boots, wear long hair tied back, and remove jewelry. Please dress comfortably in layers with the weather in mind. Volunteers should also plan to bring a full reusable water bottle and gloves if you have them.
