Hudson River Watershed Alliance Annual Conference
October 24 - 26, 2022 • Across the watershed, communities are experiencing climate hazards including localized flooding, intense drought, Harmful Algal Blooms, beach closures, wildfires, and other impacts on water resources. To further community understanding of climate change, its impacts, and how we can prepare for it, the Annual Watershed Conference theme is Climate Change Impacts on Water in the Hudson Valley. This year, Hudson River Watershed Alliance is using a hybrid model for the conference, taking advantage of the respective strengths of both virtual and in-person programs. The first day’s webinar will share key context on climate projections and risks, providing a foundation for the conversations on adaptation strategies at the in-person sessions. The virtual session brings together scientists and experts that otherwise would have had to travel, using a format that is easy to record and reference in the future. Both in-person sessions feature local case studies and strategies from the Hudson River watershed, and will prioritize networking and conversation.

The 2022 Watershed Conference schedule:

  • Monday, October 24, 2022 • 1-3:30pm • Virtual session to share climate change projections and other context-setting information.

  • Tuesday, October 25, 2022 • 9am – 12:30pm • An in-person session at the Henry A. Wallace Center, FDR Presidential Library & Museum in Hyde Park, to discuss climate change adaptation strategies and share case studies.

  • Wednesday, October 26, 2022 • 1-4pm • An in-person session at the Hudson River Maritime Museum Barn in Kingston, focused on flooding issues faced by municipalities along the Hudson River. This session will be facilitated by River Network, and will inform the Hudson River Flood Resilience Network’s strategic roadmap.

Kingston Street Sweep
Monday, October 24, 2022 • 10am - 2pm. (Rain date: October 31) • 177 Broadway, Kingston, at the corner of Broadway and McEntee • Riverkeeper is partnering with the NY-NJ Harbor & Estuary Program (HEP) to conduct fall "street sweeps" in both Kingston, NY and Hoboken, NJ. We will be using a comprehensive data collection protocol developed by HEP to focus on litter generation and dispersal methods along the right-of-ways, including sidewalks, to create linkages to the issue of floatable material or marine debris in the Estuary. • Volunteers are strongly advised to wear long pants and sturdy closed-toed shoes or boots, wear long hair tied back, and remove jewelry. Please dress comfortably in layers with the weather in mind. Volunteers should also plan to bring a full reusable water bottle and gloves if you have them. You will be required to follow safety protocols at this event, including wearing a safety vest at all times. • To register, complete this Google form.

Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum: Halloween Spooktacular!

Trunk or Treat: Firefighter Edition

Legends by Candlelight 2022
Continues October 29-30, 2022 • Tour times: 6pm, 7pm, 8pm • Clermont State Historic Site, 87 Clermont Ave., Germantown • In this annual event visitors will meet a horde of “ghosts” from Clermont’s past as they tell their stories of glory, loss, success, and failure. Some ghosts may be scary, some may be funny but all the stories they tell are true! On Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30, visitors will begin their night of spooky entertainment enjoying a bonfire with marshmallows, then be whisked off on a walking tour to meet the ghosts of Clermont. Hulda: The Other Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Weekends through Sunday, October 30, 2022 • 1pm and 3:15pm • Cost: $25 • The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, 430 Broadway, Sleepy Hollow • Each fall, thousands of people from around the world flock to Sleepy Hollow to visit the burial ground made famous in Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” The famous graveyard was also known for another resident, Hulda of Bohemia, the “High German witch doctor” who, according to Irving, is said to have bewitched Sleepy Hollow so that a “drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land.” Edgar Mayhew Bacon’s 1897 book Chronicles of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow mentions Hulda as the woman whose basket weaving and healing abilities led to her being shunned as witch, while her skills as a sharpshooter made her a Revolutionary War hero. The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow has honored Hulda with a gravestone, as well as a live presentation of Hulda: The Other Legend of Sleepy Hollow, performed by storyteller Carla Lynne Hall with a live original score performed by Jim Keyes. • tickets.hudsonvalley.org/events

Cemetery Crawl
Ongoing through Sunday, October 30, 2022 • Cost: Free • 7562 N Broadway, Red Hook • Historic Red Hook is kicking off the spooky season early this year with their second annual Cemetery Crawl! This event is both a seasonal Scavenger Hunt and a year-round, self-guided tour of six Red Hook cemeteries that offers highlights of the lives of interesting individuals and their memorials. All you need is your smartphone and some good weather and you’ve got a lovely way to spend the fall season enjoying local history. You can find Historic Red Hook’s booth on Hardscrabble Day, on September 17 from 10am to 4pm in the Village of Red Hook, where they will officially launch the event. Theatre on the Road and the Old Dutch Church in Kingston present a new living history tour, THE CITY AWAKENS
Saturdays in October • 7pm • The Old Dutch Church Cemetery, 272 Wall Street, Kingston • During the one-hour tour guests will meet George Clinton, a Revolutionary War hero who became the first Governor of New York. Visitors will also meet American abolitionist and women’s rights activist Sojourner Truth. John Jay the first Supreme Court Justice will make an appearance, along with James Lindsley, the first mayor of Kingston. Matthewis Persen, a local tavern owner during the time of Revolution will talk about the history of his infamous house and Mama Nuchwe, a member of the Esopus tribe, tell you what life was like in the area before the Dutch arrived in 1658. • Tickets are $15 per adult, $10 students and seniors, 12 and under are free and must be purchased by visiting livinghistoryny.com. Hudson Valley Free Day at Dia Beacon
The last Sunday of every month • Dia Beacon offers free admission for residents of the Hudson Valley. (The following counties: Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Sullivan, Ulster, Washington, and Westchester.) Additionally, City of Beacon residents (including the adjacent Hudson Valley communities of Chelsea, Fishkill, and Glenham) receive free admission to Dia Beacon every Saturday and Sunday. The 13th Season of ‘Bridge Music’
Through October 31, 2022 • 8am-8pm • Free • Mid Hudson Bridge (Towers), U.S. 44-55, NY, Poughkeepsie/Highland • Bridge Music, Joseph Bertolozzi's musical opus celebrating the iconic Mid Hudson Bridge (and sister project to Tower Music from the Eiffel Tower in Paris) opens its 13th season April 1. Free and open to the public, this sound-art installation is located at each of the bridge's towers, accessed from the Mid Hudson Bridge's pedestrian sidewalks at Johnson-Iorio Park, in Highland. Dam Removal Case Studies
Thursday, December 8, 2022 • 8:30-9:30am • Cost: $0 • Virtual event • NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) Hudson River Estuary Program provides grant funding to dam owners that are interested in removing their dam. Dam removal is a river restoration strategy that can reconnect stream habitat, improve water quality, and reduce flooding hazards. This can be an expensive and complex process that involves close collaboration with NYS DEC regulatory staff. Michael Fraatz, Biologist from NYS DEC Bureau of Ecosystem Health, will discuss the 2021 removal of a historic dam within the Moodna Creek in the Village of Washingtonville, NY. He will review the work plan between the applicant and agency staff, compliance monitoring during removal, and restoration of impacted areas post-construction. Suzette Lopane, Landscape Architect from Westchester County, will share information on their work removing barriers on the Furnace Brook in Westchester County. The Maiden Lane Dam is no longer compliant with the latest standards for dam safety.
