Written by Mark O’Rowe and directed by Patrick Dougherty & Joey Taylor. Howie the Rookie is a twisted tale of revenge and retribution; a tale of two halves in which two Dublin youths share a surname and intertwined destinies. The Howie Lee sets out on an honor bound quest of vengeance, instigated by a scabies-infested mattress. Meanwhile, The Rookie Lee is scrambling to pay off his debt to a terrifying gangland figure for killing his prized Siamese fighting fish. Join us for an epic white-knuckle ride through nightmare Dublin, where enemies and allies are interchangeable, and the most brutal events take on a mythic significance. Howie the Rookie contains graphic descriptions of sex and violence, mature and obscene language and descriptions of death. Kites Over the Hudson

Hominy Workshop
Sunday, September 25, 2022 • 10am – 12:30pm • Cost: $45 • Wild Hudson Valley, 408 Lake Mills Rd, Cairo • Did you know that corn is much more nutritious if it has been nixtamalized (made into hominy)? Native people throughout the Americas have known about this process for millennia, and in the Hudson Valley, indigenous cooks would process much of their corn with lye made of water and hardwood ashes. The end product, called hulled corn or hominy, is also more flavorful because of the ashes, and is higher in vitamin B3 and in calcium. Today, Lenape people continue to process corn with the same methods in their communities in Ontario, Wisconsin and Oklahoma. We learned how to hull corn in 2015 on a visit to the Moraviantown Reserve in Ontario – a community comprised of native people whose ancestors came from throughout the Hudson and Delaware Valleys. Join us for a workshop on hominy making with our recently-harvested flour corn! Fall Forest Bathing Walk
Sunday, September 25, 2022 • 10am • Clermont State Historic Site • Join Cultured Forest for an hour of guided Spring Forest Bathing at Clermont State Historic Site. Forest Bathing is based on a Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku that involves connecting with nature by “Bathing in the Forest Atmosphere”. Studies show time in nature lowers blood pressure, boosts immunity and reduces stress. In this activity, you will indulge with fellow nature lovers in relaxing mindfulness and self-care in a guided outdoor class. Plan to see some of the most peaceful areas of the park, while learning activities that allow you to better connect with yourself and the outdoors. Leave feeling centered and more at peace. Learn how to bring mindfulness in nature into your personal wellness routine. The session ends with a tea ceremony. Please Note: This will require about a mile of hiking with some stairs and walking up and down steep inclines and over rocks. Please be sure to wear comfortable shoes with tread that can walk over rocks and grass. There will not be a bathroom break during the session, but restrooms are available at the park. Brewster Fall Festival

The First HIKE for the HUDSON
Through September 30, participants will log minutes towards individual and/or team goals. At the end of the month the results will be tallied and celebrated on October 2 at the Elks Lodge in Beacon • Register online for $15.30 and set a goal for minutes walked. Ernest Withers: The Picture Taker

Cemetery Crawl

The 13th Season of ‘Bridge Music’
Through October 31, 2022 • 8am-8pm • Free • Mid Hudson Bridge (Towers), U.S. 44-55, NY, Poughkeepsie/Highland • Bridge Music, Joseph Bertolozzi's musical opus celebrating the iconic Mid Hudson Bridge (and sister project to Tower Music from the Eiffel Tower in Paris) opens its 13th season April 1. Free and open to the public, this sound-art installation is located at each of the bridge's towers, accessed from the Mid Hudson Bridge's pedestrian sidewalks at Johnson-Iorio Park, in Highland. John Jay's Not-So-Big City: A Walk Through the History of Old New

Warwick Valley Applefest

Segregation & Staatsburgh: From Black Service to White Servants
Monday, October 10, 2022 • 1pm • Cost: Free • 75 Mills Mansion Drive, Staatsburg • Staatsburgh’s founder, Governor Morgan Lewis, enslaved people of African descent at Staatsburgh. Yet, when his great-granddaughter, Ruth Livingston Mills, lived at Staatsburgh at the turn of the 20th Century, the staff was exclusively White and of European descent. At the same time, a free Black community was able to grow and thrive in the surrounding hamlet. • Join site staff for a conversation exploring the transition from a Black presence at Staatsburgh during the early 19th Century to the apparent absence of Black people at the estate during the Gilded Age. This one-hour program will include historic photographs and documents related to this history, notably a letter from Staatsburgh’s archives detailing the sale by Morgan Lewis, of Peter Williams into slavery, to fellow “Founding Father,” John Jay. NYS DEC Climate Smart Communities Grants & Cayuga Creek Floodplain Restoration (Webinar)
Thursday, October 13, 2022 • 8:30-9:30am • Cost: Free • Virtual • Myra Fedyniak from NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s Office of Climate Change will present on Climate Smart Communities Grants. The Climate Smart Communities Grant Program is a competitive 50/50 matching grant program for municipalities to implement projects focused on climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas mitigation. Project types also include certain planning and assessment projects that are part of a strategy to achieve Climate Smart Communities Certification. Emily Root from Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper will share their work with the Town of Niagara to restore and reconnect the floodplain of the Cayuga Creek, with funding in part from the Climate Smart Communities Grant program. This project restores habitat, mitigates downstream flooding, and improves community access. This program is supported by funding from the Hudson River Estuary Program, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, with support from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund, in cooperation with NEIWPCC. • Link

14th Annual International Hannah Arendt Center Conference: “Rage and Reason: Democracy Under the Tyranny of Social Media”

Hulda: The Other Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Saturday, October 15, 2022 - Sunday, October 30, 2022 • 1pm and 3:15pm • Cost: $25 • The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, 430 Broadway, Sleepy Hollow • Each fall, thousands of people from around the world flock to Sleepy Hollow to visit the burial ground made famous in Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” The famous graveyard was also known for another resident, Hulda of Bohemia, the “High German witch doctor” who, according to Irving, is said to have bewitched Sleepy Hollow so that a “drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land.” Edgar Mayhew Bacon’s 1897 book Chronicles of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow mentions Hulda as the woman whose basket weaving and healing abilities led to her being shunned as witch, while her skills as a sharpshooter made her a Revolutionary War hero. The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow has honored Hulda with a gravestone, as well as a live presentation of Hulda: The Other Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which opens October 15th. Virtual Lecture: The Hudson Valley in the Ice Age
Thursday, October 20, 2022 • 7pm • Virtual • Starting about 25,000 years ago, an immense sheet of ice advanced out of Labrador and swept southward across much of North America. A good deal of that ice entered the Hudson Valley and continued all the way to today’s Long Island. During this advance, the ice scoured all of our Hudson Valley and created much of its landscape, especially the Wall of Manitou – the Catskill Front. Later the climate warmed and the ice melted back to the north. Vast quantities of meltwater poured out of the retreating ice and sculpted by erosion a great deal more of our valley’s landscape. Several cycles of glacial advance and retreat occurred, and their combined erosive processes shaped our picturesque scenery. • Register: here.
