2018 Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby
Creativity is going downhill in Kingston, and it’s actually a good thing!
That’s because the 23rd Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby will take place this Sunday, August 19 with artists testing out their wacky, homemade creations for the annual gravity-fueled race down Broadway.
Participants will assemble their “kinetic sculptures” – non-motorized mobiles – and take off down lower Broadway to thrill spectators, and hope their creations complete the course in one piece.
Winners will receive artist-designed trophies and prizes during an awards ceremony near the visitor’s center following the race. Awards will be granted for the Coveted People’s Choice Award, first place in the kids division, and recognition of the Rondout Reject, aka the Horses’ Ass Award, for the team that rolls in last place. Bonus: The grand prize is $1,000!
There will also be live bands, food and vendors.
If you and your buddies think you can create the best way to get down the Rondout – with options to steer and brake! – register through race day at kingstonartistsoapboxderby.com/register. Fee is $45 for adult entries, $35 for kids (13 and younger) entries. *Watching is free!*
