Sinterklaas is coming! The Hudson Valley’s adapted tradition from our Dutch settlers honors the local children as kings and queens, “the bringers of the light at the darkest time of year.”

The joy-full day starts at 10am with the Bear Beauty Contest at Samuel’s Sweet Shop where kids can dress up their teddybears and win a prize! At 6pm, the ever-enchanting Children’s Starlight Parade will fill Market Street with artist-created puppets, dancing and music – all are welcome to join the parade after it passes by! The tradition of Sinterklaas comes all the way from the Netherlands, brought by Dutch settlers who arrived in Rhinebeck over 300 years ago. Sinterklaas, the patron of children and sailors, finds a welcoming community in the Mid-Hudson Valley as we re-create the story through the lens of modern-day America.
