Public input sought for fence along Hudson River

River views in Rhinebeck Red Hook and Tivoli may be fenced and gated if a proposed installation from Amtrak is approved.

Amtrak's proposal calls for the installation of approximately 8,600 feet of fencing along sections of the railway between Rhinebeck and Stuyvesant. According to Amtrak, the decision to install a fence with gates is intended to keep pedestrians and vehicles out of harm's way from passing trains.

"While we understand the safety intent and purpose of the proposed project, there has not been adequate time or information given to the communities to evaluate the proposed locations will affect access to the river," Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro stated. "It is unfortunate that we were not notified directly of this process earlier, where the local municipalities and we might have been able to engage in discussions with Amtrak on identifying areas of concern and where appropriate access restrictions and methods would be prudent."

The public comment period is open until May 1, 2018.

Comments must be filed, in writing, no later than 4:30 p.m., on May 1, 2018.
