Update: Troopers apprehend Greenville man after fatal house fire

Update: New York State Police have found and arrested Thomas David Ryan, 32, of Greenville, in connection to a fatal house fire at a residence on Greenville Turnpike in Greenville on August 6, 2026 around 7:30pm.

On the evening of August 6, New York State Police in Greenville responded to a reported structure fire at a private residence on the Greenville Turnpike.

After the fire was extinguished, the body of a deceased male was located inside the residence. The victim has been identified as Thomas Ryan’s father, Robert Ryan, age 70, of 512 Greenville Turnpike. The preliminary investigation has revealed the fire was deliberately set, and state police is investigating the death as a homicide.

Officials say Ryan, who did not live with his father, had been living a transient lifestyle, and was considered armed and dangerous following the fire.

New York State Police say they received a tip on Saturday, August 8 of a vehicle Ryan was driving, a Toyota Prius, was located in an unoccupied parking lot on State Route 990V in the Town of Gilboa in Schoharie County.

Ryan received medical treatment at the scene for injuries sustained prior to apprehension, NYSP say. He was transported to a hospital where he remains in stable condition. He is currently in the custody of the New York State Police “and will be charged and arraigned when his medical condition permits.”

The New York State Police thank the members of the public who remained vigilant and provided information throughout this investigation.

“This investigation demonstrates what can be accomplished when the community and law enforcement work together toward a common goal,” Troopers said in a statement. “The information provided by alert members of the public, combined with the relentless efforts of our investigators, Troopers, and law enforcement partners across multiple jurisdictions, allowed us to locate Thomas Ryan and bring this search to a safe conclusion. I am extremely proud of the professionalism, coordination, and determination demonstrated by everyone involved, and we are grateful to the public for their vigilance and continued support.”
