Mohonk Preserve Testimonial Gateway (2024) by Andrew Michael Andrews

$2,000.00

One-of-a-kind, cut-and-layered art paper for a three-dimensional effect, unframed, ~20x16." Built in the early 1900s as an anniversary gift to the Smileys, the Testimonial Gateway served as the formal entrance to Mohonk Mountain House before Mountain Rest Road was constructed. This piece features a number of innovations to my technique, and purchase includes the photo template that I used for tracing its layers (an interesting artifact of the paper-sculpting process).

Meet the Maker:

Name: Andrew Michael Andrews

What county do you live in?: Dutchess

Tell us about yourself + your work:  I started using cut-and-layered art paper to decorate my apartment near Washington DC in 2010, and my love interest at the time lavished my work with praise, inspiring me to develop and improve my technique. I later moved to New York City and more recently to the Hudson Valley, continuing to find inspiration not only in the places I live, but also those to which I travel. Really, though, I'm interested in using my technique to depict places that are special to others, so they can smile with fondness every time they see my customized work on their own walls!

How long have you been living/working in the Hudson Valley?: I escaped NYC at the end of 2020 and love the comparative friendliness, quiet and beauty of the Hudson Valley!

Where or what are your favorite things to do in the Hudson Valley?: My philosophy has long been that "variety is the spice of life," so I am always searching for interesting and different activities to share with my partner: live theatre (from County Players in Wappingers Falls to Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill), concerts (from classical at The Stissing Center to Mariachi at Bard College; from jazz at The Falcon to free outdoor cover bands at the Vanderbilt and Mills Mansions), modern dance performances at Vassar College, Burlesque/Cabaret in Hudson and Phoenicia, adult storytelling shows at Tompkins Corners and Rosendale Theatre... and let's not forget hiking at so many nearby scenic parks and walking or biking all of the area's rails-to-trails! In addition, we attend trivia at Hudson Ale Works in Highland hamlet with our neighbors, and board game nights with the Mid-Hudson Meeples Meetup group!
