Thursday, November 19, 2020 • 11am • The Hastings Center, Garrison • Dr. Anthony Fauci will explore the ethical issues raised by the erosion of trust in science in a new virtual discussion hosted by The Hastings Center. The nation’s top infectious diseases official and Hastings president Mildred Solomon will look at how we can improve public understanding of complex issues in ways particularly suited to problem-solving and respectful dialogue. What is the proper balance between safety and speed when developing new therapeutics and vaccines? And who should decide when scientists and members of the public disagree? Monuments, Memorials and Markers: In the Museum and the Community
Thursday, November 19, 2020 • 6pm • Virtual event hosted by the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar • panel will focus on local initiatives by Celebrating the African Spirit (CAS), a community organization whose mission is to honor the contributions of enslaved Africans and their descendants to the building and growth of the City of Poughkeepsie. CAS is working to establish historical markers and memorials, and it sponsors artistic, educational, and health and social wellness programs. The panel will also feature the new statue of Sojourner Truth adjacent to the Walkway Over the Hudson. Speakers include CAS co-founders Kalimah Karim, Carmen McGill, and Vassar professor Katherine Hite; Loeb Art Center curator Mary-Kay Lombino; and special guest artist Vinnie Bagwell, sculptor of the Sojourner Truth monument, who will discuss that project and reflect on her work creating other public art commissions that foreground African American history. Sketchbook Traveler Virtual Drawing Workshops
