Hudson Valley Ice Yachts

a display of authentic Hudson Valley Ice Yachts – including KRISS, built for FDR's uncle John Aspinwall Roosevelt, CYCLONE, built for Herman Livingston Rogers, son of the Roosevelt’s Hyde Park neighbor Archibald Rogers, and 999, built for the owners of the J. G. Bodenstein Ice Tool Company in Staatsburgh, New York in the 1870s. Additional items and artifacts relating to winter sports and Hudson Valley ice yachting culture, including an antique toboggan used by FDR in his youth from the National Park Service collection, will be displayed in the visitor center. Regular admission to the museum is required to view the Library’s artifacts. The display is presented by the Hudson River Ice Yacht Preservation Trust and Hudson River Ice Yacht Club: hriypt.org.

Developed in collaboration with a distinguished committee of scholars, “Black Americans, Civil Rights and the Roosevelts, 1932-1962” centers the historical voices of many Black community leaders, wartime service members, and ordinary citizens who engaged the Roosevelt administration directly and who pushed for progress. Within this context, the exhibit examines the political evolution of both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt regarding racial justice. The exhibit features documents and artifacts – many on display for the first time – from the Roosevelt Library’s rich holdings and from private collections nationwide. The Spongy Moth in Our Yards and Forests

Outbreaks of very hungry caterpillars have defoliated trees in the Hudson Valley and beyond. Will this happen again in 2024? Will defoliated trees recover? Can we do anything to protect our trees and forests? This event will feature Cary scientists Clive Jones and Charles Canham, who bring deep expertise on the topic.
