Each floor is transportive and grounding, escapist and inescapable. • wassaicproject.org/exhibitions/no-misery-can-tell-no-word-of-farewell
Chasing Icebergs: Art and a Disappearing Landscape
On view through March 26, 2023 • Olana State Historic Site, Hudson • The first winter exhibition at Olana State Historic Site will be shown primarily in the Sharp Family Gallery at Olana, and highlights Frederic Church’s iceberg sketches from his 1859 intrepid voyage to the Arctic. Risking his life, Church chartered a ship to the treacherous waters surrounding Newfoundland and Labrador — an area known as Iceberg Alley — on a mission that made him the first American artist to explore the region for the purpose of painting icebergs, a landmark event in the history of art. The exhibit includes photographs and historic texts which Church collected about icebergs and Arctic exploration, as well as the work of four contemporary artists who contemplate the wonder and fragility of Earth’s polar environments. For tickets and additional information, visit OLANA.org/icebergs.

Saturday, January 7, 2023 • Two sessions: 1:30 - 2:30pm or 2:45 - 3:45pm Cost: Free but registration is required • Arts Mid-Hudson, 696 Dutchess Turnpike (Rt. 44), Poughkeepsie • New year’s resolutions can be stressful but the Japanese kakizome method is here to help! Kakizome or "first writing," takes place within the first few days of the year, traditionally in a poetic calligraphic form expressing their hopes and aspirations for the coming year. This custom consists of putting your chosen wishes and hopes onto paper as a means of realizing them. For example, if you hope for good health in the New Year, you would write a kanji for positive health; if you desire more patience, you would practice the kanji for tolerance or acceptance. Kakizome is about positive wishes for the New Year. It is a reflective practice based on the belief that practicing one kanji over and over helps the writer focus on the hoped-for theme. Join Arts Mid-Hudson for Kakizome 2023 to practice kanji as a guide into the New Year. Volunteers from the local Japanese community will be on hand, offering guidance in choosing and writing your chosen kanji. Brushes, paper, and ink will be provided. • Registration required: Link

Wednesday, January 18, 2023 • 7pm • Virtual, via Zoom, register at Eventbrite • Free and open to all • Join the Cary Institute for a virtual lecture by authors Robert and Johanna Titus exploring how the landscapes captured by Hudson River School artists were first sculpted by ice age processes. The recession of glaciers formed the mountains and valleys of the Catskills and created the landscapes we have come to know through the works of Thomas Cole, Sanford Robinson Gifford, Frederick Church, and others. These artists produced images of grand wilderness that popularized the region and influenced the early environmental movement. Discover the ice age origins of iconic Hudson River School paintings, and gain a new appreciation for the people who framed this picturesque region along with its glacial underpinnings. • This event is free and open to all. Please register via Eventbrite to receive Zoom login info. • Register
