Her position opened countless doors to befriend the elite of America and Europe and to attend the most exclusive parties and cultural events. Visiting Old West Hurley
Thursday, March 27, 2025 from 7-8pm
Cost of admission: Free
Virtual event via Zoom
Presentation by Kara Keene and the West Hurley Library. The Hurley area of New York underwent extraordinary changes during the early1900s to build a safe drinking water system for New York City. To create the manmade reservoirs necessary to gather the water for this endeavor, New York City claimed the right of eminent domain. Within the township of Hurley, the hamlets of Ashton, Glenford, and West Hurley were removed and the area flooded to construct the Ashokan Reservoir. The city condemned these towns, paid compensation to property owners, forced people from their homes, and cleared the land. Construction began on the dam in 1907. Zoom link

This month’s program features "New York and Dutchess County on the Brink of Revolution," presented by Dutchess County Historian Will Tatum. We all know the story of the final months of royal government in Massachusetts before the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” was fired at Lexington on April 19, 1775. But what was that final period of undisputed British supremacy like in New York — specifically in Dutchess County? How did local residents feel as the Imperial Crisis of the 1760s and early 1770s reached its explosive conclusion? Join us for an engaging discussion on life in our region on the brink of Revolution. This event is free and open to the public. RSVP is encouraged but not required. As Lasting Joy Brewery is an open venue, we cannot strictly enforce RSVPs, but letting the host organization know you're coming helps with planning. Overwintering
On view through April 7, 2025
Women’s Studio Workshop, 722 Binnewater Lane, Kingston

An exhibition of works on, of, and off paper, Overwintering is the culmination of work produced by Studio Intern Gil Dickinson, Nonprofit Management Intern Julia Maisel-Berick, and Assistant Studio Manager Celia Shaheen while living and working at Women’s Studio Workshop. Hailing from far warmer corners of the country – Florida, California, and Texas–these artists took inspiration from steadfast creatures that use practices of “overwintering” such as hibernation and migration to survive cold, icy conditions. Bonding over stoves full of soup, freezing pipes, and shoveling snow, Overwintering is a celebration of trips to the thrift store before dark, of piling under blankets during a movie, of dinners, and making a home together. Through studies and meditations on local wildlife, domestic spaces, collecting, and reliquaries, the three distinct bodies of work in Overwintering hold the stillness and pensiveness of winter alongside the light and energy of a new spring. https://wsworkshop.org/upcoming-exhibitions/

An exhibition of camera-based work by artists exploring the role landscape plays in burying or exhuming social history. Landmines coincides with the bicentennial of Hudson River School founder Thomas Cole’s first trip up the Hudson River. The trip is often recounted as the origination of an art movement lauded for pastorals that were inflected with Protestant ideals. Yet what this exhibition commemorates is a confluence of events that give broader significance to the year 1825 and that compel us to think critically about the relationship between land, representation, and history. https://newpaltz.edu/dorskymuseum

Cost of admission: $25 advance, $30 at the door
Unicorn Bar, 224 Foxhall Ave Kingston
Step into the unknown: you are invited to an intimate preview of Greater Mysteries. Inspired by the myth of Inanna, Greater Mysteries is more than an album—it's a living, breathing experience. The music mirrors Inanna's journey of transformation to express the deep, universal truths found in the myth. In a time when the world itself is in the midst of a great transformation, this journey is more relevant than ever. Greater Mysteries is an invitation to explore the mystery of transformation in your life. On April 16, the Unicorn Bar will host Lesser Mysteries, a preview performance inspired by ancient springtime initiation rituals that honor the season of rebirth and the rhythms of the natural world. Featuring the collective artistry of Kelli Scarr on vocals, Cilla Bonnie on bass, Sam Kassirer on piano, Matt Bauder on woodwinds, Jeff Lipstein on drums, and other surprise guests, this intimate gathering will offer a first glimpse into the Greater Mysteries that will unfold this fall. This is not just a performance—it is an exploration. As an audience member, you are invited to participate in the development of this project. Your presence, your experience, and your feedback will help shape the journey ahead. Join us as we begin our journey towards the grand revelations of Greater Mysteries, when immersive live performances will be staged in caves, drawing on the archetypal relationships between music and initiation rituals. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this transformative experience. The journey begins here. We believe art should be accessible to all — if cost is a barrier, please reach out to info@kelliscarr.com for sliding scale options.
