A.T. Cook was a seeds man, nurseryman and more to our point a postcard publisher. Cook was born in Clove, New York in 1846. By 1876, Cook had established himself in the business of selling seeds at Clinton Hollow. By 1890, he enjoyed a wide success and moved a few miles to Hyde Park. Cook continued in business until 1923 when he died suddenly. Cook published approximately 150 post cards that promoted good cheer, conservation, poetry of the countryside and the pleasures of a well-regulated life. Every year, members of the United States Border Collie Handlers Association and the North East Border Collie Association travel from far and wide to bring their beloved sheepdogs to Caora Farm in Millerton, an active sheep farm with 78 acres conserved by the Dutchess Land Conservancy. There, border colllies engage in competitive herding trials that the public is free to come and enjoy. This 90 minute guided hike will lead visitors through the park, exploring the history of three historic estates: from Staatsburgh's founding as a gentlemen's farm in the 1700s to the development of The Point and Stonehurst estates in the 19th century. Eight action-packed weeks of performing arts at Bard College’s 20th annual SummerScape! This year’s schedule includes theatrical performances of “Illinois,” which is the product of the brilliant collaboration between three artists (Tony Award-winner Justin Peck, composer Sufjan Stevens and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury) to create spectacular display of storytelling, dance, theater and music based on Stevens’ 2005 album titled “Illinois.” Also on tap are performances of the French opera “Henri VIII” by Camille Saint-Saens. Directed by Jean-Romain Vesperini, this production stars Alfred Walker (bass-baritone) as Henri VIII and Lindsay Ammann (mezzo-soprano) as Anne Boleyn. The Spiegeltent, meanwhile, will keep the party hopping all summer long with live music performances, drinks and dancing. SummerScape also includes the 33rd incarnation of the Bard Music Festival, which will explore the life and work of Ralph Vaughan Williams, one of the greatest symphonists of the 20th century. Air Shows at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome

Up, up and away! The Aerodrome is set to begin a new season of high-flying action with antique air shows every Saturday and Sunday! The Saturday "History of Flight" program highlights the Pioneer Era before World War I and the Golden Age of Aviation in the 1920s and 30s. The Sunday air show is the World War I dog-fight spectacular, with a hero or heroine, the villainous Black Baron of Rhinebeck, scenery, pyrotechnics and a World War I tank, along with many antique automobiles. There are usually between 15 and 20 flyable aircraft for each show, including a 1909 Bleriot, a Fokker DR-1 Triplane and a precise replica of the Spirit of St. Louis. Open-cockpit biplane rides — which offer stunning views of the Hudson River and the surrounding highlands — are available before and after the air shows from 10 a.m. until twilight. Beatriz Cortez: The Volcano That Left: Beatriz Cortez will present new and recent large-scale works for her first solo museum presentation on the East Coast + Ugo Rondinone: the sun and the moon. Set against Schunnemunk and Storm King Mountains, Ugo Rondinone’s the sun and the moon, comprises a pair of 16-feet tall delicate circles fashioned from cast-bronze tree branches. The exhibition is built upon the principles of two celestial forces representing contradictory, codependent, and complementary values. The sculptures will be accompanied by two interactive artworks, your age and my age and the age of the sun and your age and my age and the age of the moon in the Museum Building’s main floor gallery + Outlooks: RA Walden: RA Walden will present a site-specific installation for the 10th iteration of Storm King's Outlooksprogram. Developed in collaboration with a distinguished committee of scholars, “Black Americans, Civil Rights and the Roosevelts, 1932-1962” centers the historical voices of many Black community leaders, wartime service members, and ordinary citizens who engaged the Roosevelt administration directly and who pushed for progress. Within this context, the exhibit examines the political evolution of both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt regarding racial justice. The exhibit features documents and artifacts – many on display for the first time – from the Roosevelt Library’s rich holdings and from private collections nationwide. General Benedict Arnold is infamous for his thwarted plan to surrender American-controlled West Point to the British during the Revolutionary War. Join PHM for a history hike of Arnold’s escape path through present day Garrison. Along the way we’ll discuss why the General was driven to betray the Revolution and how prominent local loyalist Beverly Robinson aided Arnold’s mission. Reps from the Cornell Cooperative Extension will join the hike and they will explore some of the ways that the natural environment plays a part in the history of the area. This history hike includes scenic views of the Hudson River and West Point and will last approximately 1.5 hours. The trail is one mile in length but includes uneven rocky terrain and several steep hills. Appropriate footwear and active/outdoor attire strongly suggested. RAWdance’s CONCEPT series salon, an institution of the San Francisco dance scene, plants roots in the Hudson Valley this July. An intimate and informal salon of contemporary dance, the CONCEPT series serves high quality dance art with an informal, living room vibe, complete with popcorn. A pay-what-you-can event, the series is a welcoming antidote to the stuffiness that can surround concert dance.
Since its debut in 2007, the CONCEPT series has shared works by nearly 150 Bay Area dance artists to date. RAWdance expanded to two locations in 2019 and has been eagerly awaiting the right moment to bring the series to its Hudson Valley home, creating a new opportunity to see work by the area’s dynamic, professional dance makers. RAWdance’s Co-Artistic Directors (and High Falls residents) Wendy Rein and Ryan T. Smith act as hosts between performances, serving trays of goodies and a healthy dose of banter. Taking place at the industrial-chic Senate Garage in Uptown Kingston, the CONCEPT series will highlight contemporary dance makers from the Hudson Valley region. Participating artists include Sarah Chien, who is coming off of an April performance at Gibney as part of the ∞therside collective; DOCKDANCE, the duo of Charlotte Stickles and Maddie Leonard-Rose; dance theater artist Chris Black of New Paltz (a
San Francisco transplant like RAWdance’s Co-Artistic Directors); dance artist Jillian Sweeney, and Sondra Loring, a pillar of the Hudson Valley arts community. RAWdance will also be showing new work in development. For the series, choreographers are encouraged to share work at any point along the creative process, from reimagining repertory to testing out new work fresh from the studio. The Rosendale Street Festival is a family-friendly, not-for-profit grassroots organization that was started in 1978 to showcase local talent and to celebrate the birthday of Rosendale icon, Uncle Willy. Today, the Rosendale Street Fest continues this tradition and has evolved into a two-day event that closes Main Street and boasts six stages, over 70 bands, over 100 of the best vendors in the Hudson Valley, a dance party, kids crafts, and short films. Street Fest is an entirely volunteer-run event, and proceeds go to supporting the Kingston, New Paltz, and Rondout Valley School District music departments. For Upstate Art Weekend 2023, Garrison Art Center will feature the incredible work of James Murray. James is an accomplished artist with an inspiring background, having graduated from the School of Visual Arts and is a U.S. Merchant Marine Captain. As a sculpture-teaching artist and exhibiting artist member of the Garrison Art Center, James creates stunning works of art using reclaimed wood, steel, stone, and found objects. During the weekend of July 21-24, visitors to the Garrison Art Center will have the opportunity to view a selection of James Murray’s completed work displayed throughout the grounds of the Art Center including the riverfront park of Garrison’s Landing. Saturday, July 22, and Sunday, July 23, visitors will have the opportunity to experience a steam bending demonstration along with wood assembly by Murray. Spend the morning with the firefighters of the Greenport Fire Department and learn to operate a real fire hose! Can you fill the big barrel with water the fastest? Younger children will have the opportunity to use packs that squirt water: firefighters use these to fight brush fires! Get ready to work with brave firefighters to take on this challenge, and see who will “rain” supreme during Water Wars! After the public portion of the event, Junior Firefighters and Explorers will get the chance to compete with one another during their very own Water Wars!
