Transformations above and underground in Rosendale

After parking our car, we were handed a twig of sage to begin our evening of transformation and ritual during artist Kelli Scarr’s Greater Mysteries release at the Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale.

Before heading into the subterranean world of the former cement mine, guests took moments of grounding around the property, washed our hands with rose water and were instructed to keep silent until entering the cave – a feat in itself (especially for some) for a sold out crowd.

Inside the cave, Scarr and Greater Mystery companions created a journey into the underworld of Inanna – the mythical goddess of love, fertility and war – with resonant acoustics that bounced against the ceiling and columns of the mine’s otherworldly backdrop.

“This project has lived in me for lifetimes, and bringing these participatory concert-rituals into the cave with you was a true dream made real,” Scarr said.
