  • The torch for the Empire State Winter Games started its eastern trek in the Hudson Valley this week. The relay for the February 1-4 games began at the Mid-Hudson Ice Arena in Poughkeepsie on Sunday. Members of the Hudson Valley Skating Club then carried the torch into Ice Time in Newburgh later that day. On Tuesday, January 30, the torch will be carried in Valerie at the Community Bank at noon, followed by a parade in Saugerties from Washington Avenue to Main Street to the Kiwanis Ice Rink.   • Talks about public transit will resume in Dutchess County on Monday, January 29 beginning at 5:30pm at the Poughkeepsie Safety Building, located at 505 Main Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. County transit staff will review the planned changes and new routes including a new hourly service along the popular stops along Route 9.   • Ready to show off your sweet kickflips? The New Paltz Skate Garden Design Meeting will take place this Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 7pm at the Village Hall 1st Floor Meeting Room, 25 Plattekill Avenue (Use the entrance adjacent to the former fire department garage bays) or join the meeting via Zoom.   • The Magazzino Italian Art Campus in Cold Spring will be temporarily closed from Friday, February 2 through Friday, February 16, 2024. The museum will return to its regular winter hours on Saturday, February 17, 2024 from 11am to 5pm. magazzino.art/visit/visitor-info/visitor-info-overview

  • ICYMI (and need it): On January 16, the Ulster County Department of Mental Health moved to 368 Broadway in Kingston, the location of the new Ulster County Center for Well-Being, which will serve as a hub for mental health and wellness services. The county’s non-profit partners are already offering services like urgent mental health care and substance use disorder counseling, and later this year, the county will open a crisis stabilization center on the ground floor with services for youth and adults 24 hours a day, seven days a week: ulstercountyny.gov/mental-health

  • Do you know who loves the Hudson Farmers Market? Al Roker! In a new video for AARP, 3 Things Al Roker Loves to Get When Shopping, the famous weatherman says he’s been shopping at the Hudson market for over 20 years “because I like getting to meet the people that grew my food!” The 2024 Winter-Spring Hudson Market starts this Saturday, February 3 at the Elks Lodge at 201 Harry Howard Avenue in Hudson from 10am to 1pm each Saturday through April 13. There will be approximately 30 vendors each weekend including many favorite regulars, many familiar guests, hot food, hot drinks, and live music. Check out the full February schedule.

  • From February 1 - March 15, the NY Natural Heritage Program is hosting the 3rd Annual HWA Winter Mapping Challenge in partnership with the NYS Hemlock Initiative. Join the challenge to help map HWA along the “leading edge” of its current range, and compete to win! To participate: find some hemlock trees in your area, check for HWA egg masses (look for white fuzz balls on the undersides of twigs), and report your findings to NY iMapInvasives. The iMap users who survey the most sites for HWA will win the challenge! Visit the NY iMapInvasives website to learn more about the challenge and connect with HWA mapping efforts in your area.

  • Application Open for 2024 Music in the Parks performers: Applications are now open for performers for The City of Kingston’s 2024 Music in the Parks series. Music in the Parks is the City of Kingston’s free, family-oriented concert series held at various Kingston park locations on Saturday evenings during the summer. Selected ensembles will receive an honorarium. Due to a large number of Kingston-based artists interested in performing, an application process has been established. The deadline for submissions is February 29, 2024. The 2024 Music in the Parks performer applications can be found at https://www.kingston-ny.gov/musicintheparks The Music in the Parks 2024 Selection Panel will be conducting reviews in early March. Selected performers will be notified by mid-March. All applicants will receive a response once selections are completed. Applicants not selected will be kept and considered in the event of an opening.

  • Call for submissions: The Second Annual March “Monologue” Madness is seeking original submissions of all genres for its second annual event taking place on Saturday, March 23, 2024. Pieces must be 10 minutes or less. Scripts or video clips must be received by the Morton Memorial Library in Rhinecliff by January 31, 2024. Accepted play authors will be notified by March 1, 2024.
