Ulster installs first-in-the-state air quality network

Ulster County officials have partnered with Bard College and the Hudson Valley Community Air Network to create the first community-based, street-level air quality network in New York State.

17 ground‑level air quality sensors have been installed at libraries, town halls, and community centers across the county.

“As we saw with wildfires in recent years, air quality can be surprisingly variable in different areas of the county,” Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger said. “Poor air quality can harm people’s health, especially older adults, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. By building this ground‑level network, we’re equipping our residents with real‑time, accessible information to make informed decisions about their exposure to the air outside.”

Residents can sign up to receive text alerts for notifications when your local air quality is poor and again when conditions improve. See the map and learn how to sign up for free air quality notifications at ulstercountyny.gov/air-quality.
