Free native trees available if you live within the Hudson River Estuary

Healthy stream buffers, comprised of native trees, shrubs, and grasses, help to reduce water pollution, erosion, and flood damage, and provide habitat for fish and other wildlife, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Luckily for land owners, the Hudson Estuary Trees for Tribs programs offers free native trees and shrubs for qualifying planting projects along the tributary streams within the Hudson River Estuary watershed.

If you own or manage property near a stream in the Hudson River Estuary Grants Program boundary (PDF), you are eligible to apply for assistance from Hudson Estuary Trees for Tribs. If your project is selected, you will be responsible for preparing, planting and maintaining the site. Program staff may be able to assist with plant selection, designing a planting plan, and other technical assistance to help your project succeed. The DEC encourages applicants to recruit local volunteers to help with planting and maintenance.

The application deadline for fall plantings is August 1. Fall planting projects begin October 1, 2025. To apply, complete and submit an application (PDF).
