History of “Ellerslie”
Friday, October 25, 2019 • 7pm • Morton Memorial Library and Community House, 82 Kelly Street, Rhinecliff • The Rhinebeck Historical Society presents a talk by Michael Frazier on the property south of Rhinecliff, one of Rhinebeck earliest land transactions in 1686. The 1,000-acre site with some of the best views of the Hudson River, has served to the home of a state senator, a vice president, prep school cadets at a Catholic military academy, and delinquent teenagers. In addition to sharing share recently recovered original plans of the Morton mansion prepared in 1887 by architect Richard Morris Hunt, Frazier will also share personal recollections from the time he served as a teacher/administrator at the campus. In Frederic Church’s Ombra: Architecture in Conversation with Nature

These architects were asked to examine assumptions about the relationship of architecture and landscape at Olana, as well as to explore the Main House’s transition to the surrounding natural environment, particularly in our time of climactic and environmental change.
