D'Arcy Simpson Art Works Presents: Elements of a View by Zach Neven
On display until March 11, 2023 • noon-5pm • Cost: Free • 409 Warren Street, 409 Warren Street, Hudson • Zach Neven’s minimalist landscapes are informed by place. He grew up and still lives in Columbia County and spends much of his time exploring and photographing back roads and mountain trails searching for new views and vistas of this beautiful countryside. The mountains, fields, forests and skies are starting points for his interpretations, which are reduced to elemental compositions of vibrant color and geometric shapes. Outlines appear where colors meet creating equally weighted, compact, flattened forms. While they are succinct and austere, they are also spiritual and expansive manifestations of the artist’s kinship with his surroundings. • darcysimpsonartworks.com

Exhibition: No Misery Can Tell, No Word of Farewell
On view through March 18, 2023, Saturdays, noon to 5pm • Maxon Mills, Wassaic • No Misery Can Tell, No Word of Farewell, the Wassaic Project’s 2022–2023 winter exhibition, sees eleven artists take on the coming world with the clear-eyed dignity of a folk song. Among them, Cate Pasquarelli’s glass cloche sculptures subtly question the miniaturization and commodification of our collective crises, Richard Barlow’s monumental chalk drawings speak to threatened water reserves in the Hudson Valley, Eric Garcia’s acrylic mural captures the devastation of communities caught in the middle of geopolitical resource struggles, and Raul De Lara’s sculptures and photos literalize the inseparability of ecology, immigrant labor, and consumer products at the Texas border. Each floor is transportive and grounding, escapist and inescapable. • wassaicproject.org/exhibitions/no-misery-can-tell-no-word-of-farewell

Risking his life, Church chartered a ship to the treacherous waters surrounding Newfoundland and Labrador — an area known as Iceberg Alley — on a mission that made him the first American artist to explore the region for the purpose of painting icebergs, a landmark event in the history of art. The exhibit includes photographs and historic texts which Church collected about icebergs and Arctic exploration, as well as the work of four contemporary artists who contemplate the wonder and fragility of Earth’s polar environments. For tickets and additional information, visit OLANA.org/icebergs.

Bard Theater & Performance Program presents Hippolytos
February 25–26, 2023 at 7:30pm
Cost: $15
Bard College
Phaedra is in love with Hippolytos — Hippolytos is her stepson. Hippolytos is in love with purity – obsessed with chastity and virginity. He worships Artemis and neglects Aphrodite. So Aphrodite takes her revenge and brings Hippolytos and his rigid world of patriarchal binaries to its knees. As Phaedra gets swept along, a pawn in Aphrodite’s scheme, she wrestles with her body, her place in the world—and how to survive as a woman in a society built on subjugation. With dark psychological acuity, Hippolytos unflinchingly delves into the complexities of transgression, desire, shame, family, betrayal, revenge, and the absolute horror of being in love. fishercenter.bard.edu/events/euripides-hippolytus/
