Week of January 16-22, 2023
▲ The Hudson River School of Art & its Ice Age Origins
Wednesday, January 18, 2023 • 7pm • Virtual, via Zoom, register at Eventbrite • Free and open to all • Join the Cary Institute for a virtual lecture by authors Robert and Johanna Titus exploring how the landscapes captured by Hudson River School artists were first sculpted by ice age processes. The recession of glaciers formed the mountains and valleys of the Catskills and created the landscapes we have come to know through the works of Thomas Cole, Sanford Robinson Gifford, Frederick Church, and others. These artists produced images of grand wilderness that popularized the region and influenced the early environmental movement. Discover the ice age origins of iconic Hudson River School paintings, and gain a new appreciation for the people who framed this picturesque region along with its glacial underpinnings. • This event is free and open to all. Please register via Eventbrite to receive Zoom login info. • Register

The exhibit includes photographs and historic texts which Church collected about icebergs and Arctic exploration, as well as the work of four contemporary artists who contemplate the wonder and fragility of Earth’s polar environments. For tickets and additional information, visit OLANA.org/icebergs.
