The truth remains elusive as their exact date of construction and creators remain unknown. Despite the diverse beliefs on their origin, there is consensus that these chambers are manmade. They display incredible craftsmanship, some stretching over 30 feet in length and up to 10 feet in their interior width. Their stone walls have been meticulously constructed without mortar, displaying a unique “corbelled” design, gently curving inward towards ceilings that can reach over six feet. A Conversation about Slavery in the Hudson Valley: Two Linked Descendants Share Their Story

Debra Bruno and Eleanor Mire each grew up knowing nothing of the history of slavery in the Hudson Valley. When they learned that New York’s 200 years of slavery began in New Netherland and extended well into colonial times, they were shocked. To their surprise, they also discovered through a Facebook group called “I’ve Traced My Enslaved Ancestors and Their Owners” that they both descended from families from Greene County, on the west bank of the Hudson. They also learned that Debra’s ancestors enslaved Eleanor’s ancestors, information that sent them on a dive into even more research, and the eventual truth that their connection was probably also a genetic one. Air Shows at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome

Up, up and away! The Aerodrome is set to begin a new season of high-flying action with antique air shows every Saturday and Sunday! The Saturday "History of Flight" program highlights the Pioneer Era before World War I and the Golden Age of Aviation in the 1920s and 30s. The Sunday air show is the World War I dog-fight spectacular, with a hero or heroine, the villainous Black Baron of Rhinebeck, scenery, pyrotechnics and a World War I tank, along with many antique automobiles. There are usually between 15 and 20 flyable aircraft for each show, including a 1909 Bleriot, a Fokker DR-1 Triplane and a precise replica of the Spirit of St. Louis. Open-cockpit biplane rides — which offer stunning views of the Hudson River and the surrounding highlands — are available before and after the air shows from 10 a.m. until twilight. Gates open at 10 a.m., which gives you plenty of time to check out the Aerodrome’s museum and grab a bite to eat at the snack stand. Within this context, the exhibit examines the political evolution of both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt regarding racial justice. The Burning of Kingston

Revolutionary War re-enactors, talks and panels, tours, concerts and more. The 2023 Burning of Kingston will kick-off on Friday, October 13, with a film about Indigenous Loyalists during the Revolutionary War, Oneida Nation: American Revolutionary War, The People of the Standing Stone at Old Dutch Church. On Saturday, October 14, events include colonial camp re-enactments, a talk about the Esopus Indian experience in the American Revolution by Justin Wexler; jazz vespers depicting the plight of slaves during the Burning of Kingston; cemetery tours by Theatre on the Road; and a Colonial Ball. On Sunday, October 15, there will be a walking tour of Hurley’s historic Main Street; and the weekend will conclude with a Revolutionary War-period chamber music concert by the Bard Conservatory of Music Ensemble. To kick-off the PHM’s Native American Heritage weekend, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Putnam County, along with the Putnam History Museum, will lead a history hike of Mount Nimham in Putnam County. Mount Nimham has a long history from its early days as home to the Wappinger people to the construction of the Nimham Fire Tower in 1940 by the CCC. Lead by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County, this hike will explore the ways that the mountain’s past has played a role in its environmental present. The Putnam History Museum will also touch on the Indigenous history of the area, including the namesake of the mountain, Sachem Daniel Nimham.
