James Joyce’s Ulysses has fascinated, perplexed, scandalized, and/or defeated readers for over a century. Building on a rich history of staging modernist works—Gatz, The Sound and the Fury, The Select (The Sun Also Rises)—Elevator Repair Service (ERS) takes on this Mount Everest of twentieth-century literature in their Fisher Center debut. Seven performers sit down for a sober reading but soon find themselves guzzling pints, getting in brawls, and committing debaucheries as they careen on a fast-forward tour through Joyce’s funhouse of styles. With madcap antics and a densely layered sound design, ERS presents an eclectic sampling from Joyce’s life-affirming masterpiece. fishercenter.bard.edu/events/elevator-repair-service-ulysses/

Putnam County’s Mysterious Stone Chambers: Panel Discussion
Friday October 6, 2023 from 7-8:30pm
Cost: $25
Virtual and in-person at the Desmond-Fish Public Library, 472 NY-403, Garrison
The Stone Chambers of Putnam County are a captivating mystery as there is great uncertainty regarding their origins and purpose. Theories abound regarding their origin – are they root cellars of colonial construction or perhaps ancient sites associated with Celts, Vikings, or Indigenous Peoples? The truth remains elusive as their exact date of construction and creators remain unknown. Despite the diverse beliefs on their origin, there is consensus that these chambers are manmade. They display incredible craftsmanship, some stretching over 30 feet in length and up to 10 feet in their interior width. Their stone walls have been meticulously constructed without mortar, displaying a unique “corbelled” design, gently curving inward towards ceilings that can reach over six feet. On Friday night, immerse yourself in a lively panel discussion featuring five leading experts and enthusiasts in the field of stone structures in the Northeast. Our esteemed panel will share their insights and theories about the origins and mysteries surrounding the Stone Chambers. The panel will take place both in-person at the Desmond Fish Public Library Community Room in Garrison, New York, and simultaneously broadcast on Zoom, allowing attendees from around the world to participate. Our panel of authors, researchers, and enthusiasts includes: Chip Marks, Michael Menders, David Steinberg, Craig Watters, and Linda Zimmerman. putnamhistorymuseum.org/events/putnam-countys-mysterious-stone-chambers-panel-discussion-tours/

Debra Bruno and Eleanor Mire each grew up knowing nothing of the history of slavery in the Hudson Valley. When they learned that New York’s 200 years of slavery began in New Netherland and extended well into colonial times, they were shocked. To their surprise, they also discovered through a Facebook group called “I’ve Traced My Enslaved Ancestors and Their Owners” that they both descended from families from Greene County, on the west bank of the Hudson. They also learned that Debra’s ancestors enslaved Eleanor’s ancestors, information that sent them on a dive into even more research, and the eventual truth that their connection was probably also a genetic one. During this Morning Coffee webinar, learn how community organizing can inspire local governments to take action, with examples from one forward-looking municipality in the Hudson Valley.
