New movie theater opening in Midtown Kingston

This week, Upstate Films will open the first movie theater in the City of Kingston in more than 40 years.

Upstate Midtown, located at 591 Broadway in Kingston, the site a former barbershop, is Upstate Films’ third location that is intended to serve as a “flexible, community-friendly gathering place.”

"We’ve been dreaming of a theater in Kingston for years,” said Paul Sturtz, co-Executive Director of Upstate Films. “It’s a city that’s very alive and very much needing more places to gather."

The “intimate venue” holds 42 seats, and will feature regular screenings of award-winning and popular films, classic titles presented by the Kingston Film Foundation, and a rotation of events co-created by Kingston-based organizations.

“Upstate Midtown might not be the movie palace we were first imagining, but in some ways it’s even better,” Sturtz added. “It’s intimate and low-key and perfectly situated to become a center of activity and resource for the community and the region.”

The theater will officially open on Friday, September 19, 2025 with a sneak peek of a new film by Oscar-nominated director Raoul Peck, followed by a preview of the new documentary on The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and a film on the teenage girls’ band, The Linda Lindas.

Ticket prices are $7 for Upstate Films members, students and current and former military; $11 general admission. Free events will be ticketed at $1, with some seats available at showtime. Tickets can be purchased at upstatefilms.org
