Cole, Church…Barstow?
She hiked every peak in the Catskill and Adirondack mountains, reportedly in bloomers (trousers worn under a skirt), “tramping twenty-five miles a day, and sketching as well, often in the midst of a blinding snow-storm” to find inspiration for her grand landscape paintings that she exhibited alongside notable male artists of the time - but what do we really know about Susie Barstow?
In 2023, for the first time ever, the Thomas Cole National Historic Site, the home of Hudson River School founder Thomas Cole, hosted a retrospective showcasing Barstow’s painting to “reinsert the accomplished 19th century artist into the history of the Hudson River School of landscape painting,” curated by historian Nancy Siegel.
On Friday, March 1, 2024 at 7:30pm, Siegel will further detail “Susie Barstow and Her Circle: the Women of the Hudson River School” through previously unknown archival materials (letters, dairies, photographs, paintings, drawings, and sketchbooks) to discuss the life and career of this fascinating artist within the context of the Hudson River School as part of the Clinton Historical Society’s First Friday programming.
