Sojourner Truth Day marked in New York State

November 26 is officially Sojourner Truth Day in New York State.

The announcement of the passage of the new legislation honoring the legendary Ulster County-born abolitionist and women’s rights advocate was made on the morning of November 26, the day of Truth’s death, during the unveiling of a new historic marker outside of the Ulster County Courthouse where Truth became the first Black woman to successfully sue for her son’s emancipation from slavery.

“Her life reminds me and all of us that we are far more capable than we imagine,” said YMCA Farm Project Youth Empowerment Coordinator Aleshanee Emanuel, who helped lead efforts to establish a day of remembrance for the abolitionist icon.
