Free CIA for vets
In 1946, after her oldest son was killed in the last months of World War II, Katharine Angell joined Frances Roth to found a school to train veterans returning from WWII to become chefs, bakers and other masters of the culinary arts in order to rejoin the workforce.
The institute first opened with three faculty members and 16 students – all veterans. Four years after its founding, 600 veterans graduated from the school.
Today, the world’s premier culinary college – the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park – is still serving our veterans, and will be offering complimentary lunch or dinner to former service members in recognition of Veterans Day.
Veterans dining at American Bounty, The Bocuse Restaurant, and Ristorante Caterina de' Medici (lunch only) at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park on Friday, November 10, will receive a complimentary meal; reservations are required. Without a reservation, current and former service members can stop by the CIA for a meal on the house at the Apple Pie Bakery Café (up to $20), and The Egg student dining venue (up to $15). Military veterans can also use their GI Bill to earn an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree from the world-famous CIA. To learn more about its programs, veterans are invited to virtual discussions on November 7 and December 5, 2023. More info: https://www.ciachef.edu/cia-culinary-careers-for-veterans/
