The Great Germantown Fire
Written By HVNY
Eight buildings on Main Street in Germantown were destroyed in the fall of 1923. The fire, believed to be sparked by “a hastily discarded cigarette,” raged through the town overnight.
Some buildings survived, some were destroyed, and some buildings survived, but were dismantled and moved to other locations causing “great confusion to people looking at photos of the fire’s aftermath today.”
Learn more about the great Fire of 1923 during a special history talk led by Thomas Shannon with the Germantown History Department at the Germantown Library on Thursday, January 25 beginning at 5:30pm. The event will take place both in person at the library and virtually via Zoom: https://germantownlibrary.org/event/history-talk-the-great-fire/
