A local bakery has made a deal with comedian and late night talk show host John Oliver after the bakery sought items auctioned off from the recently-shuttered Red Lobster in the Town of Ulster. Eric Diesing of Diesing’s Bakery in Kingston was hoping to acquire a 36-inch flat top grill from the Red Lobster restaurant that recently closed, but the show had already bought all the items from the restaurant (and there was no 36-inch grill anyway.) On Sunday night’s show, the host of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver offered to purchase the desired grill for the bakery on one condition: “All I want in return is a baked good with my face on it on sale in your bakery, specifically a cake bear with my face on it. I wanna be a cake bear.” Eric Deising responded on Monday morning: “Challenge accepted … your special cake bear is in the oven and will be made today!” Mini-John Oliver cake bears will also be for sale through the weekend with all proceeds going to the People’s Place, a local food pantry in Kingston. (Diesings is located at 111 North Front Street in the City of Kingston.)
