  • Ask and John Oliver will deliver – Not only did comedian and late night host John Oliver deliver the kitchen equipment sought from the Red Lobster closure, but he also giving a bit more to thank Deising’s for his “cake bear” delectables – Oliver announced on Sunday night that he will be donating $10,000 to People’s Place in the City of Kingston. “We are incredibly thankful to him and Deising’s Bakery for this amazing support. Without Deising's Bakery and Restaurant initiative to donate all proceeds from the bear cakes to People’s Place, this generous donation wouldn’t be possible. We are so grateful for their partnership and the community’s enthusiasm.” There are only a few hundred cake bears available Monday morning as of this post, but donations can continue at peoplesplace.org/donate.

  • On Wednesday, partners with the Historic Huguenot Street in New Paltz will dedicate two commemorative markers memorializing Susanna and Anthony, the first two individuals on record to have been enslaved by a New Paltz Patentee. Records indicate that Susanna and Anthony were purchased by Louis DuBois at public auction in Esopus around 1673/74, approximately 350 years ago. Not long after their enslavement by DuBois, the pair self-emancipated, presumably returning to the estate of their former enslaver, Colonel Lewis Morris. According to HHS, a dispute over the ownership of Susanna and Anthony resulted in lengthy legal proceedings (1675-1680), which ultimately gave Col. Morris legal ownership.  The production of these memorial markers has been funded by Andreas du Bois, a direct descendant of Louis du Bois' brother. A public unveiling of the markers will be presented at this year’s New Paltz Juneteenth Jubilee, hosted by the Dr. Margaret Wade-Lewis Center at Historic Huguenot Street, on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 beginning at 10am. https://www.huguenotstreet.org/calendar-of-events/2024/6/19/juneteenth-jubillee
