Officials warn of email scam soliciting funds for permit approvals

Local officials are warning residents of a widespread scam where “a group is impersonating town officials via email, sending various messages in attempts to solicit funds from companies and individuals.”

Individuals applying for Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals throughout the region are being targeted by email, according to officials. Town of Poughkeepsie Supervisor Rebecca Edwards said, in one email, payments are being requested via wire transfer under the guise of “fees necessary for permit approvals.”

“The Town of Poughkeepsie will never request a wire transfer payment for placement on an agenda or email someone in this manner to demand fee payments for permit approvals.”

The City of Poughkeepsie issued a similar warning, also noting that “The City of Poughkeepsie will NEVER request or accept payments via wire transfer, ACH, or credit/debit card over the phone or by email.”

If you receive any email correspondence requesting personal information or payment, it is recommended to follow-up with a phone call to confirm its validity. Additional resources are available at dutchessny.gov/ofaprintable
