Winter Storm expected to bring over a foot of snow to the Hudson Valley
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the entire region starting Sunday morning as a massive, long-duration storm moves through the Northeast, with up to two feet of snow possible in some areas. A State of Emergency has been declared.
What to expect:
Heavy accumulation of light, fluffy snow starting early on Sunday morning, and “intensifying quickly.” Snow may change to sleet closer to the city Sunday evening. Bitter cold temperatures will prolong impacts. Dangerous to impossible travel expected.
How much?
Accumulations between 12- and 18-inches. Snowfall rates may exceed one-inch per hour at times. Meteorologist Ben Noll says localized totals reaching two feet are possible.
When?:
Snow will begin Sunday morning, around 5 to 8am, moving south to north, and continues through Monday evening. Conditions are expected to impact schools and the commute on Monday.
How to prepare:
Stay at home, and inside – including your pets. Make sure your phones are charged, your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working, you have extra batteries available, flashlights, a few extra blankets and non-perishable foods on hand. Don’t set your thermostats below 55-degrees, and open cabinet doors to circulate warmer air around plumbing.
Travel conditions will be difficult; If you need to go out, make sure your car has a phone charger, jumper cables, a first aid kit, hat and gloves, a blanket, a flashlight, a snow brush and shovel, a spare tire, water and snacks, and a full tank of gas. If you get stranded, stay in your car and wait for help. Hang a bright cloth on your antenna, run the engine 10 minutes each hour with the heater on, keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow and slightly open a downwind window for ventilation.
After the storm: Take your time and frequent breaks, bend with your knees not your back, hydrate and check on your neighbors.
