“FDR’s Disability: A True Story” with Dr. Shelby Landmark
Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at 2pm
Cost of admission: Free
Wallace Center at the FDR Presidential Library and Home, Hyde Park

While Franklin D. Roosevelt is one of the most recognizably disabled historical figures, his disability is most commonly represented in ways that imply he hid the truth of his paralysis from the public after contracting polio in the summer of 1921. Dr. Shelby Landmark’s ongoing research has revealed that the public frequently observed FDR using leg braces, crutches, canes, customized speaker stands, ramps, elevators, and even automobiles to navigate his surroundings. Rather than trying to deceive or convince the public that he was able-bodied, he wanted the public to see him as an able leader, not a “helpless invalid.” Dr. Landmark will share this research including never-before-published images of FDR and his use of mobility aids, newspaper archival examples, and archival materials found at the FDR Presidential Library. Batter Up! The History of Baseball in Kingston and Ulster County
Wednesday, March 18, 2026
Cost of admission: $5-$10
Hudson River Maritime Museum

This lecture explores the early history of baseball in Ulster County and the role the region played in the sport’s development during the mid-19th century. Long before professional leagues, baseball took root in river towns like Kingston and Rondout, where dockworkers, tradesmen, and clerks organized clubs and played on open fields. Drawing on newspaper accounts, box scores, and local records, the talk highlights how baseball functioned as both recreation and community life in the Hudson Valley. Special attention is given to local clubs, early rivalries, and games that drew regional and even national attention. This lecture also examines how Ulster County fits into larger stories about amateur baseball, race, and the transition toward organized leagues. Website

architectural photographer Onnis Luque traces these often-invisible origins of construction back to the raw landscapes from which they are born. What began in 2014 as a roadside encounter with a sand mine evolved into a years-long investigation of Mexico’s extractive geographies—from the Mezquital Valley to the Highlands of Chiapas, the Sierra de las Mitras to the Yucatán Peninsula. Through his lens, Luque captures the aftermath of relentless extraction: fractured hillsides, gaping quarries, and industrial scars etched into the land. On view through May 31, 2026. RSVP

Cost of admission: Free
Bardavon Opera House, Poughkeepsie

Doors open 30 minutes before the screening. Empire Records (1995) is a cult-classic comedy about a chaotic, independent record store fighting against being absorbed by a corporate chain. Centered on one hectic day in the lives of its colorful staff, the film blends ’90s alternative music, youthful rebellion, and sharp humor while exploring themes of friendship, self-discovery, and the importance of not “selling out.” Rex Manning Day, celebrated by fans every April 8, has become a real-world tribute to Empire Records and everything it stands for: independent music, record store culture, and not selling out. What started as a fictional promo day in the film is now an annual inside joke and celebration, with fans revisiting the movie, blasting the soundtrack, and showing love to their favorite local record stores. “Say no more, mon amour.” https://bardavon.org
