By focusing on political culture, organization, and patterns of allegiance, Minty will explore the contending allegiances of loyalists and patriots were all but locked in place by 1775 when British troops marched out of Boston to seize caches of weapons in neighboring villages. I Love A Rainy Night: The Rhythm of Forest Amphibians

Beneath the towering trees of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains, under the leaves, rotting logs, and rocks that create microhabitats on the forest floor, lives a fantastic group of amphibians. Nocturnal in their behavior and hunkered down in underground retreats, forest salamanders often go undetected – until they move on rainy nights in large numbers for their annual breeding migrations to vernal pools. Along with wood frogs, these amphibians encounter many roads that bisect their habitat, and in some places, they also encounter volunteers who lend a hand to provide safe passage. lecture sponsored by Cary Institute with Hudson River Estuary Program and Cornell biologist Laura Heady to discover the fascinating world of forest amphibians, their life histories and role in forest ecosystems, and opportunities to get involved in conservation of vernal pool-breeding amphibians. Trailside's February Hike

Trailside Museum and Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park, 3020 Seven Lakes Drive, Bear Mountain
A hike along the Major Welch Trail to Perkin's Tower. Part of Trailside Museum and Zoo's Monthly hiking series. Total hike length: Approximately 3.5 miles. Estimated time: 3.5 hours Participants will follow the Major Welch trail (Blazed white with a red circle) up the back of Bear Mountain to the summit and Perkin’s Tower. This will be a challenging hike, sturdy boots are a must and a hiking stick or trekking poles are recommended. The loop is only ~3.5 miles but we will still allot 3.5 hours for the trek. We will be gaining around 1,040 ft over the course of the hike. Some of the trail is built from stone steps and some sections are short rock scrambles. We will ascend the Major Welch Trail and then descend along the Appalachian Trail. Meet at the kiosk in front of Bear Mountain Inn (the one near the big field and the Hikers Cafe). There are bathrooms nearby, but the bathrooms inside the Inn are for guests of the hotel only. Please bring enough water for the whole hike. There are water fountains around the grounds of the Inn but none once we start up the trail. Once at the top, we will have some time to pause and take in the scenery and have any snacks you brought with. Please note that Perkins tower maybe closed, and the route may be altered if the prevailing weather makes the trail too treacherous. Link

Slavery and Anti-Slavery in the Hudson Valley

The Mid-Hudson Valley was home to a large population of enslaved people who played a major role in local history, from the first arrivals of enslaved people with colonists through the Revolutionary War and beyond. The region also played an important role in the fight to end slavery in the United States. It held two major routes of the Underground Railroad and played a critical role in the abolition movement locally and nationally. This talk by Laura Chenven will review key stories of local slavery and the people who helped to bring it to an end. She will also discuss her work with the Mid-Hudson Antislavery History Project and how the work of commemorating this period of history is ongoing. Register
