Rising temperatures and fuel prices
Since Sunday, the cost of heating oil jumped more than 14-percent. Over the past month, costs have increased over 22-percent. Gasoline prices have also increased 4-percent as of Monday morning, and 25-percent over the last month.
Even though temperatures will be on the rise this week, if you’re looking to refill your residential fuel oil after these last few brutal weeks of winter, the price per gallon has been increasing across the region, even before the war in Iran threatened global oil exports – according to NYSERDA (the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority), last week the price for heating oil averaged around $4.31 per gallon across the state, up 1.2-percent from the week before. (Note: NYSERDA updates their statewide pricing dashboard overnight on Wednesdays.)
Prices as of Monday morning.
In addition to the recent conflict in the Middle East impacting exports, local fuel companies are also alerting residents that, due to these prolonged, regionally cold temperatures and an increased demand, fuel deliveries are currently delayed up to 10 business days.
Homeowners can find a bit of relief through several local resources and events coming up this week including The Save Energy Save Dollars Workshop hosted by Mid-Hudson Regional Clean Energy Hub, part of the Cornell Cooperative Extension, at the Butterfield Library in Cold Spring on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 from 11am to noon. During the program, participants will learn how to make their home more efficient, lower utility bills and take advantage of local energy programs and incentives. The first 30 households registered for the event will also receive a free DIY Energy Savings Kit with simple upgrades like door sweeps, weather stripping, LED light bulbs, and smart power strips. Mid-Hudson Regional Clean Energy Hub also offers free energy audits to assess the energy use in your home.
