Free bus fares all year in Newburgh, Middletown
Bus fares are now free for all Newburgh and Middletown Area Transit services through December 31, 2025.
“This is a game-changer, as it will provide easier access to transportation for those who rely on it,” Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus said during the announcement. “With the rising costs of living, this will provide much-needed relief for many individuals and families to get to work, a doctor’s appointment, or the grocery store. I am happy to extend this service and to keep it running through the end of the year.”
Orange County implemented a pilot program of the free bus fare program last year, “and ridership more than doubled,” county legislator Kevindaryán Luján noted.
The initiative covers fixed-route and American Disabilities Act paratransit services in Newburgh and Middletown. The program is estimated to benefit over 200,000 riders throughout the year, and help connect residents to healthcare services, shopping plazas, and Orange Community College.
“The cost of insurance, gas prices, and maintenance can make it difficult for people to own a car these days. In turn, it makes it hard to get to work, the doctor, etc.,” said Orange County Legislator Janet Sutherland. “The free buses in Middletown and Newburgh will take the pressure off our residents and give them the ability to take care of day-to-day business with less of a struggle.”
No proof of residency is required. Detailed bus routes and schedules can be found by visiting www.ridetransitorange.com.
