Photos: Rally outside of the Poughkeepsie Social Security Office

On Tuesday, March 4, 2025 members of the community rallied outside of the Poughkeepsie Social Security office, to protest the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)’s move to have the office’s lease terminated at the end of July. The building at 322 Main Street has been closed since January for “temporary renovations.”

The nearest Social Security Offices that are still operating with in-person services are in Hudson, Middletown and Peekskill, all approximately 40-miles from the City of Poughkeepsie.

“The closest Social Security Office for most people in our county was added to the federal ‘cut list’ and has been closed,” Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger said in a statement. “This is a terrible decision affecting seniors, the disabled, wounded veterans, and surviving spouses and children.”

Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino was not at Tuesday’s rally, she was a few miles down the road to proclaim the day Hulk Hogan Day in Dutchess County, as the entertainment wrestler promoted his new beer line at the Shoprite in Heritage Plaza, located on the site of the former Hudson River Psychiatric Center, on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie.

Organizers of the rally say a vigil/rally will be taking place at the Social Security Office again on Friday, March 7, 2025 from 5pm to 7pm.
